#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Feb. 19 – Washington Drops 40 as Drexel, N.C. A&T and Stony Brook Keep Pace in the CAA Race

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 19, 2023) – Keishana Washington tallied her third 40-point effort this season to keep Drexel in sole possession of first place. North Carolina A&T and Stony Brook remain right on the Dragons’ tail, half a game back after victories on Sunday. Additionally, Northeastern pushed its winning streak to four games, Hampton won its second straight, and Charleston picked up a road victory. 
 
North Carolina A&T 65, Monmouth 62 | Box Score
North Carolina A&T battled for a much-needed win as the Aggies earned the season sweep over Monmouth with a 65-62 victory on Sunday. In a game that saw six ties and 12 lead changes, it was no surprise that the outcome came down to the fourth quarter. The Hawks led for the first 8:46 of the final frame but N.C. A&T closed the game on a 6-0 run that lifted the Aggies to victory. Trailing 62-59, A&T hit a free throw and converted a layup to tie the game before Jazmin Harris knocked down the go-ahead jumper with 17 seconds remaining. The Aggies converted a free throw down the stretch as they edged Monmouth 11-6 in the fourth. The A&T defense locked in when it needed to most, holding Monmouth to 14.3 percent shooting in the fourth and just two made field goals. Harris led a quartet of Aggies in double figures with 16 points, while Laila Acox tallied 15 points and eight rebounds. Maleia Bracone added 13 points, six assists and five rebounds, with Jordyn Dorsey contributing 12 points. Kaci Donovan paced Monmouth with 15 points, and Lovin Marsicano added a season-high 11 points off the bench.     
 
Charleston 60, Elon 58 | Box Score
Charleston edged Elon 60-58 on the road to earn the season split with the Phoenix. The Cougars sprinted out to an early advantage and led for 34:51 before holding on down the stretch. Charleston opened a double-digit lead after the first quarter, outscoring Elon 22-12 over the first 10 minutes. Elon cut the deficit to five at halftime, but the Cougars responded in the third, pushing the lead to as many as 18 before taking a 49-38 advantage into the fourth. Charleston led for the entire fourth quarter despite the Phoenix making it a one-possession game on four occasions. The Cougars knocked down five freebies in the final 30 seconds to secure the win. Jada Logan scored a team-high 23 points for Charleston, marking her third straight game over 20. She also added a team-best eight rebounds, while Alexis Andrews chipped in 17 points and five rebounds. Evonna McGill paced Elon with 17 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double this season. Raven Preston added 16 points and six boards for the Phoenix.   
 
Drexel 67, Delaware 55 | Box Score
Drexel got back in the win column in a big way, defeating long-time CAA rival Delaware 67-55 on Sunday and earned the season sweep over the Blue Hens. Keishana Washington was the difference maker, scoring a game-high 40 points, marking her third 40-point effort this season. The graduate guard is the only player in the NCAA this season with three 40-point performances. A close first half saw Drexel gain a modest 32-29 lead after 20 minutes. However, it was the third quarter that proved to be the difference as Washington outscored Delaware 15-14 by herself, and Drexel outpaced the Blue Hens 22-14, opening a double-digit lead that Delaware would not overcome. Maura Hendrixson tallied a game-high seven helpers for the Dragons and broke the Drexel single-season program record for assists. Tara Cousins scored a team-best 13 points with five rebounds for the Blue Hens. 
 
Northeastern 59, Hofstra 51 | Box Score
Northeastern extended its winning streak to four games following a 59-51 win over Hofstra as the Huskies secured the season sweep over the Pride. The Huskies raced to the early lead behind a big first half and thwarted Hofstra’s comeback attempt down the stretch. Northeastern shot 58.3 percent (14-24) in the first half to gain a 36-23 halftime lead. The Huskies were on fire in the second quarter, shooting 72.7 percent (8-11) from the floor as they outscored the Pride 17-7 in the frame. The pace slowed in the third as the teams matched each other point-for-point. In the fourth, Hofstra climbed with six twice, but Northeastern answered with a bucket on both occasions. Gemima Motema had a game-high 16 points to lead the Huskies, while Derin Erdogan flirted with a triple-double, recording 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. The Pride also had a pair in double figures as Sorelle Ineza tallied a team-high 12 points, and Zyhemia Swint added 11. 
 
Hampton 72, Towson 61 | Box Score
Hampton won back-to-back conference games for the first time this season, topping Towson 72-61 at home on Sunday. The Lady Pirates came to life in the second half, outscoring Towson 42-28 over the final 20 minutes, including 25-15 in the fourth quarter. Towson extended its lead to as many as seven in the third quarter before Hampton went on a 13-4 run, gaining the advantage at the end of the frame. There were two ties and four lead changes in the first 5:49 of the fourth quarter, but Laren VanArsdale gave Hampton a 58-56 advantage with 4:11 remaining, which prompted an 8-0 run and kept the Lady Pirates in front the rest of the way. VanArsdale had 19 points in the contest, matching Nylah Young for the team high. VanArsdale added three rebounds, three assists and three blocks, while Young grabbed four boards. Kylie Kornegay-Lucas scored a team-high 17 points for Towson, adding seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks. 
 
Stony Brook 64, UNCW 46 | Box Score
Stony Brook won its third straight game, defeating UNCW 64-46 Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves used a big second quarter to take control of the contest and never relinquished the momentum. Trailing by three after one, Stony Brook opened the second frame on a 14-3 run, eventually outscoring the Seahawks 21-8 in the quarter en route to a 10-point halftime lead. Stony Brook kept the pedal to the metal in the third, coming out of the break with an 11-0 run and outmatching UNCW 17-10 in the frame to put the game out of reach. Gigi Gonzalez paced Stony Brook with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. Sherese Pittman nearly recorded a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Annie Warren rounded out the Seawolves in double figures with 11. Carrie Gross led UNCW with 20 points, marking her sixth 20-point scoring output this season.
