UNCW Men and Women Extend Leads After Day 3 Of CAA Swimming & Diving Championships

HAMPTON, Va. (February 24, 2023) – UNCW extended its leads in both the men’s and women’s team competitions after Day 3 of CAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday night at the Hampton Aquaplex. Two more individual records went down as William & Mary’s Sophia Heilen set a new mark in the women’s 100 fly and Towson’s Brian Benzing broke his own record in the men’s 100 breast.



In the men’s team standings, defending champion UNCW leads with 617 points, Towson is second with 443 points and Delaware in third with 416 points. Drexel (367) is fourth, followed by William & Mary (269.5) and Monmouth (171.5).

In the women’s team standings, UNCW is on top with 512.5 points, defending champion William & Mary moved up to second with 369.5 points, Northeastern is third with 358 points and Delaware is fourth with 348 points. Towson (280) is fifth, followed by Drexel (227), Monmouth (130) and Stony Brook (114).

Women’s 100 Yard Butterfly

William & Mary freshman Sophia Heilen got the night started in a big way, breaking her own CAA all-time record in the women’s 100 fly with a time of 52.96. Defending champion Jamie Koo of Northeastern finished second in a time of 53.28 and placing third with a time of 54.05 was Hannah Seward of Northeastern.

Men’s 100 Yard Butterfly

Towson junior Brian Benzing picked up his second individual gold of the championship, winning the men’s 100 fly in a time of 46.25. Finishing second with a time of 46.29 was Drexel’s Kuba Kwasny and defending champion Henderson Louviere of UNCW took third in a time of 46.64.

Women’s 400 Yard Individual Medley

UNCW sophomore Katie Knorr captured her second straight women’s 400 individual medley, touching the wall in 4:15.22 to win the event by more than six seconds. Seahawks’ teammate Kennedy Grotjohn finished second with a time of 4:21.64 and Northeastern’s Devin Muldoon placed third with a time of 4:21.85.

UNCW sophomore Aidan Duffy repeated as the men’s 400 individual medley champion with a time of 3:50.68. Taking second place with a time of 3:52.03 was Drexel’s Alessio Gianni and finishing third with a time of 3:53.14 was William & Mary’s Noah Fields.

Women’s 200 Yard Freestyle

Delaware senior Mira Selling claimed her third consecutive women’s 200 free title, finishing just .35 shy of a CAA record with a time of 1:45.56. She’s the first three-time champion in the event since 2009. Placing second was William & Mary’s Katie Stevenson with a time of 1:46.40 and third place went to Drexel’s Chelsea Gravereaux with a time of 1:46.76.
 
Men’s 200 Yard Freestyle

UNCW sophomore Jacob Duracinsky took gold in the men’s 200 free with a time of 1:35.17, which was just .13 off the CAA all-time record. Second place went to Michael Fazio of Towson with a time of 1:37.11 and Drexel’s Andrea Casini was third with a time of 1:37.14.

Women’s 100 Yard Breaststroke

William & Mary sophomore Ellie Scherer earned gold in the women’s 100 breast, finishing in a time of 1:00.90. Taking second was UNCW’s Gil Shaw with a time of 1:01.11 and third place went to William & Mary’s Annie Tuttle with a time of 1:01.39.

Men’s 100 Yard Breaststroke

Towson junior Brian Benzing broke his own CAA all-time record in the men’s 100 breast with a NCAA “A” cut time of 51.25. The performance is currently the sixth-fastest by a collegiate swimmer this season and beat his previous mark of 51.47 set at the NCAA championship a year ago. Delaware sophomore Toni Sabev was also impressive with a second-place time of 51.96 and Drexel’s Kacper Karnik was third with a time of 53.17.

Women’s 100 Yard Backstroke

Freshman Ally Frame became Towson’s first CAA champion in the women’s 100 back since 2007 with a time of 53.19. Coming in second with a time of 54.71 was William & Mary’s Kat Vanbourgondien with a time of 54.71 and placing third was Northeastern freshman Anna Verlander with a time of 54.75.

Men’s 100 Yard Backstroke

Senior Callan Smith became the first Monmouth swimmer to earn gold at the CAA championship, winning the men’s 100 back in a time of 46.56, which was just .13 off the conference record. Placing second was Delaware’s Gavin Currie with a time of 46.90 and third place went to UNCW’s Will Goldey with a time of 47.09.

Men’s 3-Meter Diving

UNCW freshman Ethan Badrian completed his sweep of the diving competition by earning gold on the 3-meter board with a score of 356.15, which was the best score at the CAA championship finals since 2016. Coming in second with a score of 334.35 was Delaware’s Philip Townsend and taking third was defending champion Nic Newis of UNCW with a score of 334.25.

Women’s 200 Yard Freestyle Relay

Northeastern captured the women’s 200 free relay for the first time in its CAA history as the team of Jamie Koo, Kotoko Blair, Nikita Pelletier and Kira Parker posted a time of 1:31.01. Finishing second with a time of 1:31.24 was Drexel and third place went to Towson with a time of 1:31.91.

Men’s 200 Yard Freestyle Relay

UNCW took home gold in the men’s 200 free relay for the first time since 2014 as the team of E’Likai Crompton-English, Noah Sipowski, Jacob Duracinsky and David Fitch recorded a time of 1:19.49. Finishing close behind with a time of 1:19.50 was Drexel and taking third was Towson with a time of 1:19.57.
