#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Feb. 24 – Conference Standings Stay Tight Following Friday Night Action

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 24, 2023) – The top six teams in the conference standings remained within 1.5 games of each other following Friday night's league action. Drexel, UNCW, Towson and William & Mary earned double-digit wins, while Northeastern and Stony Brook erased double-digit deficits to keep winnings streaks alive. The Dragons remain in first place (12-4) half a game ahead of the Seawolves (11-4). There is now a four-way tie for third, with North Carolina A&T, Northeastern, Towson and William & Mary locked at 10-5.
 
Northeastern 70, Hofstra 61 | Box Score 
Northeastern overcame a 14-point deficit in its 70-61 win over Delaware to secure the fifth straight win for the Huskies. The Blue Hens scored the first five points in the third quarter to gain its largest lead of the game before Northeastern responded with a 22-0 run to flip the script and take control of the contest. The Huskies outscored Delaware 25-6 in the third quarter, which made the difference in the game as the teams matched each other point-for-point in the fourth. JaMiya Braxton scored a game-high 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting to lead Northeastern. Three other Huskies joined her in double figures as Derin Erdogan and Gemima Motema added 14 points apiece, with Motema grabbing a team-high eight rebounds and Deja Bristol contributing 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting off the bench. Makayla Pippin was one of three Blue Hens to score 11 points and tallied eight rebounds to lead Delaware. 

Stony Brook 70, Hampton 63 | Box Score
Stony Brook erased a 15-point deficit to earn its fourth straight win, defeating Hampton 70-63 at home on Friday night. The Seawolves ended the third quarter on a 15-0 run and took a 49-47 lead into the fourth after outscoring Hampton 26-11 in the frame. Stony Brook extended the run to 18-0 in the fourth and never trailed in the quarter, ending the game with six straight points. Gigi Gonzalez scored 20 of her game-high 26 in the second half, adding five rebounds to lead Stony Brook. She was one of three Seawolves in double figures with Sherese Pittman, Annie Warren and Daishai Almond, contributing 18, 13, and 12, respectively. Jermany Mapp paced Hampton with 21 points and shot 5-of-7 from three-point range.  
 
Towson 68, North Carolina A&T 57 | Box Score
Towson knocked off North Carolina A&T 68-57 to move into a four-way tie with the Aggies in third place in the conference standings. N.C. A&T opened the game on a 6-0 run, but Towson settled in, and after trailing for 8:46 in the first quarter, the Tigers ended the frame on an 8-1 run, including a three-point buzzer-beating to gain a 17-15 advantage. Towson never trailed for the rest of the game, and despite the Aggies climbing within four in the fourth, the Tigers finished the game on a 7-0 run to put the game on ice. Quinzia Fulmore tallied a career-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace the Tigers. Alexia Nelson added 13 points, and Patricia Anumgba had 11 for Towson. Jordyn Dorsey scored a game-high 19 points to lead N.C. A&T, while Maleia Bracone and Jazmin Harris each had 11 to round out the double-figure scorers. 
 
Drexel 58, Hofstra 34 | Box Score 
Drexel had its best defensive performance this season to defeat Hofstra 58-34 and collect its 20th win. The Dragons held Hofstra to a season-low in points, while the 34 points is the lowest point total for a Drexel opponent this year. Drexel limited Hofstra to 27.3 percent (12-49) shooting from the floor, and subsequently, the Dragons shot it at a 42.1 percent (24-57) clip. Keishana Washington led all scorers with 21 points, marking her 22nd game with 20 or more this season. Hetta Saatman joined her in double figures with 10 for the Dragons, while Maura Hendrixson recorded her seventh double-double assist performance with 10 dimes. Sorelle Ineza reached double figures for the eighth straight game, leading Hofstra with 12, and Emma Von Essen added 11 points for the Pride. 
 
William & Mary 69, Elon 53 | Box Score 
William & Mary got back in the win column by topping Elon 69-53 on Friday night. The Tribe used a stout defensive effort in the second quarter to build a lead and sealed the deal in the fourth. William & Mary used a 10-0 run in the second to gain separation and held Elon to 27.3 percent (3-11) shooting in the frame to outscore the Phoenix 16-7 and take a 34-25 halftime lead. After a stalemate in the third, William & Mary shot 63.6 percent (7-12) in the fourth, including five straight makes to end the game, outscoring Elon 19-12 in the final frame. Riley Casey and Sydney Wagner combined for 46 of the Tribe's 69 points, with Casey scoring a game-high 24 points and Wagner tallying 22. Lenaejha Evans paced Elon with 18 points, while Raven Preston tallied 10 points and eight rebounds for a near double-double. 
 
UNCW 63, Charleston 47 | Box Score 
UNCW put together one of its best performances in league play, defeating Charleston 63-47 to snap an eight-game losing streak. The Seahawk defense set the tone in the first half, allowing UNCW to open a 36-17 lead at the break. UNCW held Charleston to 22.6 percent (7-31) shooting in the first 20 minutes, including 21.4 percent (3-14) and seven points in the first quarter. It was a wire-to-wire victory for the Seahawks, who led for 38:45. Carrie Gross led the way with 20 points for UNCW, while Evan Miller added 13. Lexi Jackson and Asia Henderson were big for the Seahawks on the glass, recording 14 boards each as UNCW set a program record with 60 total rebounds in the contest. Jaila Roberts had a team-high 13 points for Charleston, and Jada Logan added 12 points with eight rebounds.
