#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Feb. 26 – Drexel Clinches Bye In Conference Tournament

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 26, 2023) – Drexel clinched a first-round bye in the conference tournament with a win on Sunday as the race for seeding heats up in CAA Women’s Basketball. Northeastern stayed red-hot by winning its sixth straight game, while Towson and North Carolina A&T also collected victories as all three teams improved to 11-5 in league play. Additionally, Delaware defeated Stony Brook, creating a four-way tie in second place with one weekend remaining, and Monmouth earned a last-second win over Hofstra. 
 
Monmouth 69, Hofstra 67 | Box Score 
Monmouth edged Hofstra 69-67 on the road to snap a two-game losing streak. It was a back-and-forth battle all afternoon as the game featured 14 lead changes and eight ties. The game was tied at 67 with 0.3 seconds remaining before Ariana Vanderhoop stepped to the line and knocked down two free throws after being fouled on the inbound. The Hawks retained possession after Belle Kranbuhl blocked back-to-back Hofstra attempts with under 10 seconds in the ball game. Vanderhoop had 12 points in the contest, with 10 coming after halftime, while Lovin Marsicano tallied a season-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Brandy Thomas led a Hofstra trio in double figures with a game-high 19. Emma Von Essen added 13 points, while Zyhemia Swint contributed 12 points and seven rebounds. 
 
Drexel 55, William & Mary 47 | Box Score
Drexel defeated William & Mary 55-47 to avenge a loss earlier this season and win its third consecutive game. The Dragons continued the impressive defensive effort that started Friday night as Drexel held its opponent under 50 points for the second straight game. Drexel limited William & Mary to 23.1 (6-26) percent shooting in the first half to open a 28-17 lead at the break. The Dragons led by five after the first quarter before holding the Tribe to 18.2 percent shooting, and two made field goals in the second quarter to extend its lead to double digits at halftime. Keishana Washington recorded a game-high 20 points, marking her 62nd consecutive game in double figures and 23rd this season with 20 or more. Kylie Lavelle also added 10 points for the Dragons, while Maura Hendrixson tallied nine assists. Riley Casey led William & Mary with 17 points, while Sydney Wagner joined her in double figures with 13. 
 
Northeastern 79, Hampton 46 | Box Score
Northeastern rolled to a 79-46 victory over Hampton, extending its winning streak to six games. The teams traded buckets to open the game before the Huskies went on a 15-0 run and never looked back. Northeastern shot 60.0 percent (9-15) in the first quarter to take a 23-6 lead after one. It was the first of three quarters with at least 20 points for the Huskies, who led for 38:34 and never trailed in the contest. Five Huskies reached double figures, led by JaMiya Braxton with a game-high 17 points. Deja Bristol tallied her second double-double this season with 16 points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench. Jaelyn Batts added 13 points and five rebounds, Anna Boruta had a season-high 11 points on her senior day, and Derin Erdogan contributed 10 to round out the Huskies in double figures. Nylah Young paced Hampton with a team-high 13 points.  
 
Delaware 53, Stony Brook 51 | Box Score
Delaware bounced back with a 53-51 road win over Stony Brook. The Blue Hens were stifling on the defensive end of the court, holding the league’s top-scoring offense to a season-low in points and their second-lowest shooting percentage this season. Delaware limited Stony Brook to 28.4 (19-67) shooting, including 25.7 percent (9-35) in the first half. The first-half effort allowed the Blue Hens to build a seven-point cushion, outscoring the Seawolves 12-7 in the first quarter and 17-15 in the second. Klarke Sconiers led Delaware with 20 points and pulled down five rebounds. Jewel Smalls added 15 points, splashing home five trifectas. For Stony Brook, Sherese Pittman had a team-high 13 points and nine rebounds, while Daishai Almond and Shamarla King each contributed 11. 

Towson 61, Charleston 52 | Box Score 
Towson topped Charleston 61-52 on the road in a defensive battle on Sunday afternoon. Both teams shot under 33.0 percent from the field, and neither scored over 20 points in any quarter. The Tigers limited Charleston to 25.0 percent (3-12) shooting in the first quarter, allowing them to build a 14-8 lead. The margin stayed at six through halftime, and Towson opened the third on an 8-1 run to gain its largest lead of the game. The Tigers went on to outscore Charleston 33-30 in the second half to secure the victory. Quinzia Fulmore tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double this season to lead Towson. Patricia Anumgba was in double figures for the fourth straight game, adding 12 in the victory. Jazmyn Stone paced Charleston with 14 points, while Jada Logan contributed 11 for the Cougars. 
 
North Carolina A&T 72, UNCW 44  
North Carolina A&T earned a big 72-44 win over UNCW in its final home game this season. The Aggies pulled away in the second quarter and then stamped an exclamation point on the victory in the fourth. Trailing 18-15 after the first, N.C. A&T outscored the Seahawks 20-10 in the second to take a 35-27 lead into halftime. The Aggies extended their lead by one after the third quarter before an emphatic fourth quarter saw N.C. A&T outmatch UNCW 22-2. N.C. A&T limited UNCW to one field goal and 7.1 percent shooting in the final frame to run away with the win. Jordyn Dorsey had a team-high 21 points, six assists and four steals to lead the Aggies. Jazmin Harris added 19 points and six rebounds on her senior day. Britany Range was the lone Seahawk in double figures with 12 points.
