#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Feb. 3 – Drexel Moves Into Tie for First; Charleston Wins in Overtime

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 3, 2023) – Five games on Friday were decided by ten points or less, and the margin of all six games was under 10 at some point in the fourth quarter. Drexel moved into a tie for first place in the conference standings with a win over Northeastern, and Elon knocking off North Carolina A&T. Additionally, Towson and William & Mary earned season sweeps over conference opponents, Charleston won in overtime, and Monmouth won its third game in the past four tries.  
 
Elon 63, North Carolina A&T 56  
Elon avenged its defeat against local rival North Carolina A&T from earlier this season with a 63-56 victory on Friday night. The game featured five ties and four lead changes, but despite being close all game Elon led for over 30 minutes in the contest. The Phoenix trailed by one after one but turned the deficit into a one-point lead at halftime. Elon opened the second half on a 9-0 run to push its lead to double digits before the Aggies trimmed the advantage down to five at the end of the quarter. North Carolina A&T pulled within one on two occasions, but the Phoenix maintained its lead for the whole fourth. Evonna McGill paced Elon with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, playing just 19 minutes due to foul trouble. Raven Preston recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Lenaejha Evans contributed 10 points and boards. Maleia Bracone was one of four Aggies in double figures with a team-high 15 points. Jordyn Dorsey had 12 points along with 10 points from D’Mya Tucker and Nyah Willis. 
 
Drexel 67, Northeastern 56 | Box Score
Drexel won its third consecutive game, defeating Northeastern 67-56. The Dragons shot 48.0 percent (24-50) from the field and 53.3 percent (8-15) from behind the arc compared to 38.0 percent (19-50) from the floor and 27.8 percent (5-18) from deep for the Huskies. Drexel outscored Northeastern in the first three quarters, building an 11-point advantage, and matched the Huskies in the fourth. Keishana Washington scored a game-high 29 points, marking her 55th consecutive contest in double figures. She also leads the CAA with 16 games of 20 or more points this season. Hetta Saatman and Grace O’Neill added 10 points apiece to round out the double-figure scorers for Drexel. Derin Erdogan led Northeastern with 13 points, adding six rebounds and four assists. Jaelyn Batts contributed 12 points with six boards and three helpers. 
 
Towson 67, Delaware 65 | Box Score
Towson hit a pair of free throws with 14 seconds remaining to lift the Tigers over Delaware 67-65. With the win, Towson earns the season sweep over the Blue Hens, winning both games by a combined five points. The teams entered the fourth quarter tied after Delaware erased a nine-point halftime deficit by outscoring Towson 26-17 in the third. Trailing by four, Towson went on a 10-0 run that spanned four minutes and five seconds to take a 63-57 lead. Delaware battled back and tied the game at 65 on a Jewel Smalls three with 59 seconds remaining before Kylie Kornegay-Lucas tallied the game-winning free throws. Kornegay-Lucas recorded a game-high 17 points with nine rebounds and four steals. Quinzia Fulmore recorded her second straight double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Alexia Nelson joined her teammates in double figures with 11 points for the Tigers. Three Blue Hens also reached double figures, led by Smalls, who hit five three-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds. Klarke Sconiers added 13 points, and Nakiya Mays-Prince had 12. 
 
Charleston 71, UNCW 63 (OT) | Box Score 
Charleston snapped a three-game skid, prevailing 71-63 over UNCW in overtime on Friday night. The Cougars outscored the Seahawks 13-5 in overtime after erasing an 18-point deficit to force the extra period. Charleston trailed 27-9 in the second quarter but trimmed the deficit to nine by outscoring the Seahawks 16-7 over the final 7:39 in the first half. The Cougars proceeded to outscore UNCW 20-11 in the third to tie the game at 45. Trailing by three, Charleston held UNCW scoreless for the final 2:38 of regulation and knocked down a free three with three seconds remaining to force overtime. Jaila Roberts scored a game-high 24 points and added 10 rebounds for her second double-double this season to lead Charleston. Additionally, freshman Alexis Andrews matched a season-high with 18 points, her first double-figure performance since January 1. Carries Gross scored a team-high 22 points to pace UNCW, adding six rebounds and four assists.
 
Monmouth 63, Hofstra 59 | Box Score 
Monmouth returned to the win column, edging out Hofstra 63-59. The Hawks trailed 46-44 at the end of the third quarter but outmatched the Pride 19-13 in the fourth to earn the victory. The Hawks opened the final frame with a 10-0 run to build an eight-point lead, and Monmouth hit three free throws in the final minute to secure the win. Lucy Thomas paced Monmouth with 19 points, while Ariana Vanderhoop recorded 15 points and 13 rebounds for her third double-double in the past five games. Bri Tinsley was also in double figures for the Hawks, adding 10 points. Brandy Thomas led the charge for Hofstra, recording a game-high 22 points with 10 rebounds for her league-leading eighth double-double this year. Sorelle Ineza was in double figures for the third straight game, contributing 10 points, six assists and four rebounds.  
 
William & Mary 77, Hampton 67 | Box Score 
William & Mary earned a 77-67 win over Hampton to claim the season sweep over its Commonwealth rival. Tied and 54 entering the fourth, the Tribe outscored the Lady Pirates 23-13 in the final frame to emerge victoriously. William & Mary shot 50.0 percent (9-18) in the fourth while limiting Hampton to three field goals and 25.0 percent shooting. Four players reached double figures for the Tribe, including three with at least 18 points. Sydney Wagner led William & Mary with 19 points, marking her 10th game in a row with 10 or more. Bre Bellamy tallied 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting with 11 rebounds for her second double-double this season, while Riley Casey had 18 points of her own. Rebekah Frisbey-Smith rounded out the quartet with 10 points. Nylah Young paced Hampton with a game-high 25 points, shooting 9-of-15 from the floor with eight rebounds. It is the fifth 20-point performance for Young this season.
