#CAAHoops MBB Recap – Feb. 4 – Elon and Monmouth Extend Winning Streaks in Dramatic Fashion

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 4, 2023) – Elon and Monmouth both pushed their winning streaks to three games with thrilling last-minute victories, while Charleston and Hofstra kept pace with each other atop the CAA Men’s Basketball standings and UNCW stayed within a game of first place.
Elon 74, Northeastern 73
Jerald Gillens-Butler dropped in the game-winning layup with nine seconds remaining and
Sam Sherry produced a game-saving block at the other end to earn Elon its third-straight victory. Elon (5-19, 3-8) led by 14 early in the second half but allowed Northeastern (8-14, 4-7) to battle back and lead for the majority of the final 11 minutes.
Chris Doherty scored 22 and
Jahmyl Telfort added 20 for the Huskies.
Monmouth 69, Drexel 67
Monmouth erased a 12-point halftime deficit to take the lead for good with one minute remaining and win its third straight game in CAA play.
Tahron Allen scored a game-high 19 points to lead three players in double figures for Monmouth (4-20, 3-8), which defeated the last two CAA Champions this weekend. The Hawks led for just 7:37 and never by more than four – 2:27 into the contest at 6-2. Monmouth committed five turnovers for the game, which was the Hawks' lowest total in three seasons.
Amari Williams grabbed 16 rebounds and added 12 points for Drexel (13-11, 7-5) in his eighth double-double of the year.
UNCW 70, William & Mary 63
UNCW led from the opening minute to improve to 5-1 in its last six contests.
Trazarien White scored 21 points and
Donovan Newby added 20 for UNCW (19-6, 9-3), which shot 52% from the field and 13-of-15 (87%) at the free-throw line. White was 8-for-12 shooting and Newby was 7-for-10, while the Seahawks further limited the miscues by committing only nine turnovers in the contest.
Chris Mullins scored 19 points and
Tyler Rice added 14 off the bench for William & Mary (9-16, 4-8).
Charleston 84, Delaware 67
Charleston pulled away in the second half and got back in the win column with its 22
nd victory of the year.
Dalton Bolon led four Cougars in double figures with 18 points, including 13 of the 46 in the final 20 minutes for Charleston (22-3, 10-2). Charleston led 40-38 with 18 minutes remaining before three-pointers from
Ryan Larson and Bolon kickstarted an 11-0 run. The Cougars enjoyed a 43-35 advantage on the glass, hit 13 three-pointers on 32 attempts (41%), and limited themselves to nine turnovers in the contest.
Jyáre Davis and
Jameer Nelson Jr. scored a team-high 18 points each for Delaware (12-13, 4-8).
Hofstra 79, Stony Brook 58
Tyler Thomas rose to the occasion in the absence of the CAA’s leading scorer, scoring 29 points and tallying 11 rebounds to keep Hofstra in a tie for first place. Hofstra (17-8, 10-2) won for the fifth straight game and shot 55%, including a 13-for-17 showing from Thomas and 14 points each on better than 50% shooting from
Bryce Washington,
Warren Williams, and
German Plotnikov, as the supporting cast stepped up with
Aaron Estrada out for Hofstra.
Jaquan Carlos added a double-double for the Pride with 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
Frankie Policelli tallied his league-leading ninth double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds for Stony Brook (8-16, 4-7).
Norfolk State 83, Hampton 71 (Legacy Classic – Newark, N.J.)
Marquis Godwin scored 21 points and
Kyrese Mullen added his second consecutive double-double, but Hampton was unable to get past Norfolk State in the Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic at the Prudential Center. Hampton (6-18) shot 52% in the contest and led 36-35 at the break, but Norfolk State erupted for 48 second half points to win in the second meeting between the teams this season.
Jordan Nesbitt added 19 points and eight rebounds for the Pirates, who won three out of four CAA games prior to Saturday’s non-league contest. The game was played for a national TV audience on TNT as part of a celebration of HBCU institutions during Black History Month.
