#CAAHoops WBB Recap – Feb. 9 – Hofstra Wins at the Buzzer as The Pride, Northeastern and Hampton Halt Skids

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 9, 2023) – Hofstra, Hampton and Northeastern snapped losing streaks following wins on Thursday night. The Pride won on a three-point buzzer beater, the Lady Pirates earned an impressive double-digit road victory, and the Huskies came from behind to defend home court.
Hofstra 58, Towson 57 | Box Score
Brandy Thomas hit a three-pointer as time expired to lift Hofstra over Towson 58-57, snapping a five-game losing streak for the Pride. It could not have been a more balanced game as Towson led for 17:29, and Hofstra maintained an advantage for 17:37 in a game that featured four ties and four lead changes. After trailing by two at the half, Towson pulled even at the end of the third, and the teams entered the fourth tied at 40. The Tigers opened the fourth on a 6-0 run and maintained the lead until Hofstra sunk the three at the buzzer. Hofstra cut the deficit to two with 16 seconds remaining before sending Towson to the free throw line. The Tigers split a pair of free throws, and on the ensuing possession, Thomas knocked down two freebies for the Pride. Trailing 56-55 with seven seconds on the clock, Hofstra sent the Tigers back to the charity stripe, where they split the pair once again, giving the Pride a prayer to be answered by a three-point buzzer-beater. Thomas finished the game with 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Sorelle Ineza tallied a game-high 21 points for the Pride. Kylie Kornegay-Lucas recorded 13 points, six rebounds, four steals, and three assists to lead Towson.
Northeastern 68, Stony Brook 63 | Box Score
Northeastern erased a halftime deficit, defeating Stony Brook 68-63 to get back in the win column. The Seawolves opened a 16-12 lead after the first quarter and took the four-point lead into halftime. Northeastern outscored Stony Brook 41-32 in the final 20 minutes, including 17-11 in the third quarter. A 9-0 run towards the end of the third gave Northeastern a five-point lead, and the Huskies maintained a 42-40 advantage heading into the fourth. Northeastern shot 69.2 percent (9-13) in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback outmatching Stony Brook in the highest-scoring frame 24-21. Derin Erdogan and Gemima Motema tallied 19 points each for the Huskies as the duo combined to score 19 in the fourth. Erdogan added a game-high five assists, while Jaelyn Batts grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds. Gigi Gonzalez had a game-high 23 points to lead Stony Brook, while Annie Warren added 19 points and eight rebounds. Additionally, Sherese Pittman recorded her fifth double-double this season with 15 points and 11 boards. For the game, Northeastern shot 49.2 percent (30-61) from the field while holding Stony Brook to 32.4 percent (26-74) shooting.
Hampton 66, North Carolina A&T 53
Hampton evened the season series against North Carolina A&T with a 66-53 win, marking back-to-back season splits for the long-time rivals. Hampton maintained a four-point advantage after three quarters before putting the game away in the fourth by outscoring N.C. A&T 19-10. The Lady Pirates were in control most of the night, leading for over 33 minutes, and never trailed in the second half. Nylah Young paced Hampton with a game-high 18 points, including 14 in the second half. Camryn Hill added 15 points off the bench, and Jermany Mapp rounded out the Lady Pirates in double figures with 10. Maleia Bracone and Chaniya Clark scored 13 points apiece to lead N.C. A&T, with Bracone adding a game-high nine rebounds. Hampton forced the Aggies into 31 turnovers, capitalizing with 25 points, while the Lady Pirates went 21-of-23 from the free throw line. Conversely, N.C. A&T was only 14-of-28 from the charity stripe and scored just 11 points off turnovers.
