No. 1 Towson Sprints Past No. 9 Hampton 87-65 in CAA Quarterfinals

TOWSON, Md. (March 10, 2023) – Top-seeded Towson scored a season-high 87 points and used a dominant second quarter to sprint past ninth-seeded Hampton 87-65 Friday morning in the quarterfinals of the CAA Women’s Basketball Championship presented by Primis at SECU Arena.
The Tigers (20-10) advance to the CAA Championship semifinals for the second straight season and await the winner of No. 4 William & Mary and No. 12 Hofstra in today’s second quarterfinal matchup. Hampton concludes its inaugural CAA season 12-18.
Kylie Kornegay-Lucas led four Tigers in double figures with a game-high 18 points, adding five rebounds and four assists. Quinzia Fulmore tallied her second consecutive double-double and eighth this season with 13 points and 10 rebounds in 19 minutes of action.
Hampton got a team-high 16 points from Nylah Young, while Laren VanArsdale added 15 points as both reached double figures for the second straight game in the tournament.
Towson outscored Hampton 24-9 in the second quarter to gain a double-digit halftime lead (40-27). The Tigers went on a 20-3 run capped by a Kornegay-Lucas three-point play, which gave Towson a 40-25 lead with 41 seconds remaining in the half. Kornegay-Lucas had 10 of her 14 first-half points in the quarter. The defense also turned up a notch as the Tigers held Hampton without a field goal for a stretch of 6:37 and forced four turnovers during that span.
Towson tied the game at 20 in the first minute of the second quarter before Anissa Rivera sparked the big run with a three that gave the Tigers a 23-22 lead. Towson never trailed the rest of the way and the Tigers pushed their lead to as many as 29 points in the fourth quarter.
Back-to-back baskets in the final two minutes from Camryn Hill and VanArsdale gave Hampton an 18-16 edge after a highly competitive first quarter. The Lady Pirates gained control in the frame with a 7-0 spurt in less than two minutes, taking an 11-7 lead at the 4:14 mark. The Tigers responded with nine of the next 12 to make it 16-14 with 2:02 remaining in the opening period.
Towson shot 48.4 percent (30-62) from the floor and limited Hampton to 36.5 percent (23-63) shooting. The Tigers also maintained a 48-28 edge on the glass. The point total was also the most by Towson in the CAA Tournament in program history.
