#CAAHoops WBB – March 2 – Delaware Earns Double-Digit Comeback Followed by Five Comfortable Victories on Thursday

RICHMOND, Va. (March 2, 2023) – Thursday’s CAA Women’s Basketball action started early with a thrilling double-digit comeback victory from Delaware in an 11 a.m. tip. The following five games were won comfortably as Elon, Hofstra, Northeastern, and William & Mary earned double-digit wins, while Towson secured a near wire-to-wire victory. 
 
Delaware 79, North Carolina A&T 75 (OT) | Box Score
Delaware edged North Carolina A&T 79-75 in overtime in its home finale on Thursday afternoon in front of a raucous crowd of elementary school kids. The Blue Hens hit four free throws in the final 43 seconds of the extra frame to send the children home with a smile and a story. North Carolina A&T opened a 16-point lead 77 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Delaware outscored the Aggies 23-7 over the final 8:22 of regulation, including a 15-2 run to force overtime. The teams traded scores to 75 and were knotted entering the final minute before the Blue Hens converted the four freebies. Klarke Sconiers led four Blue Hens in double figures with 20 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor with six rebounds. Makayla Pippin was 6-of-8 from the floor with 13 points and six boards, while Jewel Smalls added 12 points, and Kharis Idom chipped in 11. For North Carolina A&T, Jordyn Dorsey led the way with 20 points and pulled down five rebounds. Jazmin Harris and Maleia Bracone also reached double figures, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively. 
 
Towson 76, Stony Brook 67 | Box Score
Towson defeated Stony Brook 76-67 to win its third straight game and gain a leg up on the Seawolves in the conference standings. The first quarter proved to be the major difference in the contest as Towson held Stony Brook to 11 points and 38.5 percent (5-13) shooting in the opening stanza. Subsequently, the Tigers opened the game by shooting 52.9 percent (9-17) to score 19 points and gain an eight-point cushion. The teams were nearly identical the rest of the way, with Towson edging Stony Brook 47-46 over the final three quarters. Four Tigers reached double figures led by the duo of Kylie Kornegay-Lucas and Patricia Anumgba with 20 points apiece. Kornegay-Lucas added 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double this season with five assists and five steals. The point total was a career-high for Anumgba, while Skye Williams and Quinzia Fulmore rounded out the double-figure scorers, contributing 16 and 13, respectively. Shamarla King tallied a game-high 23 points to lead Stony Brook, which was a career-high for the junior guard. 
 
Northeastern 74, Charleston 60 | Box Score
Northeastern stayed hot by topping Charleston 74-60 as the Huskies collected their seventh straight win. It was a wire-to-wire victory for Northeastern, who won the opening tip, scored on the opening possession and never looked back. The Huskies 55.6 percent (10-18) in the first quarter to outscore Charleston 26-12 in the period. Northeastern kept its foot on the gas in the second, limiting Charleston to six points and outscoring the Cougars by 11 to gain a 43-18 lead at the half. The Huskies pushed their lead to as many as 33 before cruising to the finish. Four Huskies scored in double figures, including three with 14 points. Asha Parker went 7-of-11 from the floor with a career-high 14 points, adding a personal-best 12 rebounds for her first double-double this season. Derin Erdogan and JaMiya Braxton also tallied 14, while Deja Bristol continued to be a force off the bench, contributing 13 points and eight rebounds in 15 minutes. Jada Logan paced Charleston with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Jazmyn Stone also reached double figures with 12 points. 
 
William & Mary 70, Monmouth 60 | Box Score
William 7 Mary got back into the win column following a 70-60 road win over Monmouth on Thursday. The Tribe was powered by a 28-point second quarter, which gave William & Mary a double-digit halftime lead that Monmouth could not overcome. Leading by one, William & Mary opened the second quarter on a 13-1 run and took a 42-29 advantage into halftime. The Tribe pushed the lead to as many as 19, but the Hawks didn’t go away quietly. Monmouth cut the deficit to six in the fourth quarter before William & Mary ended the contest with eight of the final 11 points. Riley Casey poured in a career-high 33 points and added six assists to pace the Tribe. It marks her sixth 30-point effort this season and the fifth time she has matched or reset her career-high. Rebekah Frisbey-Smith added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Bre Bellamy was 6-of-7 from the floor with 12 points and nine rebounds to round out the double-figure scorers for William & Mary. It was a balanced attack for the Hawks, with four players in double figures, led by Ariana Vanderhoop with 15. Bri Tinsley and Kaci Donovan had 11 apiece, and Jen Louro scored 10 off the bench. 
 
Elon 52, UNCW 42 | Box Score
Elon used a gritty defensive performance to defeat UNCW 52-42 and snap a two-game losing streak. The Phoenix held UNCW to 26.7 percent (16-60) shooting from the floor and under 10 points in two of four quarters. After gaining a two-point lead through 10 minutes of play, Elon extended the margin to five at the half, edging the Seahawks 12-9 in the second quarter. The defensive intensity carried into the third quarter as the Phoenix limited UNCW to six points in the frame, pushing its lead to 13 and holding on to a double-digit victory in the fourth. Lenaejha Evans led the way for Elon with a game-high 18 points, marking her seventh straight game in double figures. Evonna McGill also added 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor. Lexi Jackson recorded a double-double for UNCW with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Evan Miller matched her point total and pulled down seven boards for the Seahawks.    
 
Hofstra 72, Hampton 58 | Box Score
Hofstra put together one of its best performances this season to take down Hampton 72-58 on Thursday night. The Pride shot 56.3 percent (27-48) from the floor while holding Hampton to 29.0 percent (18-62) shooting. After falling behind in the first, Hofstra used a 30-point second-quarter effort to turn the tables in the contest. The Pride shot 68.8 percent (11-16) in the second frame, outscoring the Lady Pirates 30-19 to take and 41-33 lead at the break. The Pride kept the pressure on in the third, outmatching Hampton 17-11 in the period behind a 60.0 percent (6-10) shooting effort, which provided the margin of victory for Hofstra. Sorelle Ineza went 9-of-16 from the floor and tallied a career-high 24 points to lead the Pride. She was one of four players in double figures, joined by Zyheima Swint with 14 points, Emma Von Essen adding 11, and Brandy Thomas recording her ninth double-double this season. Thomas had 10 points with 15 boards and surpassed 1,000 career rebounds in the effort. Nylah Young was the lone play in double figures for Hampton, recording her eighth 20-point scoring output this season with a team-high 22. Young also added eight rebounds, five steals and two blocks.
