Towson’s Fast Start Propels Tigers to CAA Quarterfinal Win

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 5, 2023) – Third-seeded Towson built a big early lead and never let up, beating No. 6 Delaware, 86-60, in the final quarterfinal game of the 2023 Jersey Mike’s CAA Men’s Basketball Championship on Sunday night at the Entertainment & Sports Arena.
The Tigers (21-11) advance to the semifinals against No. 2 Charleston on Monday night at 8:30 p.m. The setback dropped Delaware to 17-16.
Senior Nicolas Timberlake paced four Towson players in double figures with 19 points on 8-of-11 FG shooting and added nine rebounds and five assists. Charles Thompson tallied 17 points, Sekou Sylla scored 16 off the bench and Cam Holden contributed 14 points and six assists.
Delaware got a team-high 16 points from guard Jameer Nelson, Jr. and Christian Ray had 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Towson was clicking on all cylinders from the outset and turned in a complete performance offensively and defensively in the first half. The Tigers connected on 10 of their first 14 shots from the floor, while holding the Blue Hens to just 1-of-10 FG shooting to take a 23-3 lead less than nine minutes into the contest.
Delaware trimmed the deficit to 15, but Towson responded with a 12-0 run capped by a Sylla layup to go ahead 37-10 with five minutes until halftime. The Tigers carried a 46-20 advantage into the break with Timberlake (11 points) and Sylla (10 points) already in double digits.
Towson maintained its momentum out of the locker room, starting the second half on a 9-2 surge punctuated by a Charles Thompson dunk to go ahead 55-22 with 17:07 remaining. Delaware didn’t get closer than 24 points the rest of the way.
Towson shot 59.6% from the floor for the game and outrebounded the Blue Hens 41-23. Delaware connected on just 38.7% of its field goal attempts and was 4-of-25 from 3-point range. The Tigers also had a 41-23 rebounding advantage.
