CAA Softball Weekly Awards – May 1

RICHMOND, Va. (May 1, 2023) – The CAA has announced its 12
th softball weekly awards for the 2023 season. Stony Brook sophomore outfielder Alyssa Costello was named CAA Player of the Week, and North Carolina A&T pitcher Sharla Kirkpatrick earned CAA Pitcher of the Week honors. In addition, Charleston freshman pitcher Caroline Conner collected CAA Rookie of the Week accolades.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Alyssa Costello, Stony Brook
Sophomore | Outfield | Lanoka Harbor, N.J. / Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science
Costello batted .471 (8-17) and posted a .500 on-base percentage with four runs scored and one RBI, leading Stony Brook to a 3-1 week, including a weekend series victory over Towson. Costello hit safely in all four games, extending her hitting streak to 14 straight, including two multi-hit efforts. Five of her eight hits went for extra bases, recording four double and one triple throughout the week. In addition, Costello scored a run in all four games, adding a walk and stolen base.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Sharla Kirkpatrick, North Carolina A&T
Junior | Charlotte, N.C. / Concord
Kirkpatrick was 1-0 in the circle and picked up a save in 9.0 innings of work, helping North Carolina A&T to a series win over Hampton and secure a berth in the CAA Championship. The junior right-hander did not allow an earned run across her two appearances, scattering six hits and striking out four. On Sunday, Kirkpatrick tossed her first career complete-game shutout, leading the Aggies to a win in the rubber match of the series. It came after a two-inning save the day before, the first save in her career.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Caroline Conner, Charleston
Freshman | Pitcher | Social Circle, Ga. / George Walton Academy
Conner went 1-0 in the circle, helping Charleston to a weekend split against Elon as the Cougars secured a spot in the CAA Tournament. Starting in game two, Conner tossed 6.0 innings without allowing an earned run, scattering five hits and recording five punchouts in a 9-1 win for Charleston. It marks her 10th performance with at least five strikeouts this season and ranks fifth in the CAA in total strikeouts (94).
