SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y (May 11, 2023) – The 2023 CAA Rowing Championship takes on a new home this season as the conference championship heads to Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on Friday. The competition beings at 10:30 a.m. with the Third Varsity Eight race. The Varsity Four takes off at 10:40 a.m., followed by the Second Varsity Eight at 10:50 a.m., and concludes with the Varsity Eight at 11 a.m.
Eight teams hit the water for the first time in league history as Monmouth makes its league debut in the Third Varsity Eight. The remaining field consists of UConn, Delaware, Drexel, Eastern Michigan, Northeastern, UC San Diego and Villanova.
Eight-time defending champions, Northeastern looks to continue its reign over CAA Rowing. The Huskies have won 11 of the 13 team titles since the induction of women’s rowing in 2009. Northeastern enters the championship ranked first in the NCAA Region 2, with its First and Second Varsity Eights second in the region and its Varsity Four ranked third.
Drexel looks to break through for its first CAA Rowing title in program history. The Dragons have finished runner-up seven seasons in a row, none closer than last season in which Drexel tied Northeastern in team points but finished second in the tiebreaker. Drexel has put together an excellent season, winning the three competitions – Murphy Cup Regatta, Knecht Cup Regatta, and Kerr Cup Regatta – and ranks fourth in the NCAA Region 2.
Delaware has impressed this season and looks to compete at the top. The Blue Hens enter the championships after posting a season-best time of 5:50.17 in their final competition of the spring. Delaware is ranked fifth in the NCAA Region 2, headlined by its Second Varsity Eight ranking third in the region.
Eastern Michigan matched its highest finish at the CAA Championships last season, placing third. The Eagles also finished third in 2016 and 2019 and look to carry the momentum into 2023. In addition, Villanova returns for its seventh straight season, while UConn and UC San Diego are back for their third appearance at the championships.
