Three CAA Baseball Standouts Named Freshman All-Americans By D1 Baseball And Baseball America

RICHMOND, Va. (July 3, 2023) – Three CAA baseball players were honored as Freshman All-Americans by D1 Baseball and Baseball America.

Northeastern pitcher Aiven Cabral was chosen as a first-team Freshman All-American by D1 Baseball and a second-team pick by Baseball American, while Elon pitcher Justin Mitrovich and Northeastern outfielder Cam Maldonado were selected to the Freshman All-America second team by both D1 Baseball and Baseball America.

Cabral led the CAA in wins and earned run average in 2023, posting a 9-4 record with a 2.58 ERA. The Huskies’ right-hander struck out 69 and walked only 14 over 83.2 innings and limited opponents to a .245 batting average. He ranked 15th nationally in fewest walks per nine innings and was 20th in ERA.

Mitrovich was 7-4 with a 3.68 ERA while making 13 starts for Elon. The Phoenix right-hander fanned 66 and walked 21 in 63.2 innings of work. He ranked seventh in the CAA in ERA, eighth in strikeouts and was tied for third in wins.

Maldonado topped Northeastern and ranked seventh in the CAA with a .353 batting average. The outfielder set a Huskies’ freshman record with 13 home runs and he added 13 doubles, five triples and 45 RBI’s. The CAA Rookie of the Year also stole 32 bases in 33 attempts.
