RICHMOND, Va. (July 5, 2023) – Former Elon All-America pitcher George Kirby has been added to the American League roster for the 2023 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Kirby has had an excellent season for the Seattle Mariners, posting a 7-7 record with a 3.21 ERA. He leads MLB in strikeout-to-walk ratio (9.56), having fanned 86 over 101 innings while walking just nine. His 13 quality starts in 2023 are tied for the American League lead with Toronto’s Kevin Gausman.

The 2019 CAA Pitcher of the Year, Kirby became the highest-drafted player in Elon history when the Mariners selected him with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft. He finished the regular season that year as the national leader in strikeout-to-walk ratio (16.8). A five-time All-American, he posted a 19-8 record, a 3.34 ERA and recorded 258 strikeouts through 240 innings in his three seasons for the Phoenix.

Kirby is the first Elon player to participate in the MLB All-Star game since pitcher Tom Brewer of the Boston Red Sox in 1956.

The 2023 MLB All-Star Game is set for Tuesday, July 11 at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park. The game can be seen on FOX.
