HOPEWELL, N.J. (Jan. 24, 2024)
– Stony Brook University women’s basketball head coach Ashley Langford was named one of 10 members to the midseason watch list for the 2024 Kathy Delaney-Smith Mid-Major Coach of the Year Award, announced by Her Hoop Stats on Wednesday morning.

It marks the inaugural season of the award created to honor the top Mid-Major coach in NCAA women’s basketball, named after the legendary former Harvard head coach.

Langford has guided Stony Brook to a 15-2 record, matching the third-best start to a season in program history. The Seawolves rallied off 10 consecutive wins from December 2 to January 20, including a 5-0 start to CAA play. Additionally, Stony Brook has won all 15 games this year by double-digits, ranking 26th nationally in scoring margin (17.1), and maintains a 9-0 record at Island Federal Arena.

In addition to leading the conference in scoring margin, Stony Brook ranks first in the CAA in scoring offense (76.6), field goal percentage (44.8), three-point percentage (35.0), free throw percentage (78.6), assists per game (16.3) and rebounds per game (42.7).

The midseason watch list includes representatives from eight conferences. Langford, a former standout point guard at Tulane, is accompanied on the 2024 midseason watch list for the Kathy Delaney-Smith Award by Carla Berube (Princeton), Vanessa Blair-Lewis (George Mason), Kevin Borseth (UW-Green Bay), Lisa Fortier (Gonzaga), Gayle Fulks (Davidson), Joddie Gleason (Eastern Washington), Lindy La Rocque (UNLV), Beth O’Boyle (VCU) and Carly Thibault-DuDonis (Fairfield).

Award Eligibility & Schedule
To be eligible for the award, coaches must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be “mid-major.” The following conferences are considered high-major for the purposes of this award, and thus ineligible: ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC. Interim head coaches are eligible, although total games coached will be taken into consideration.

The 20-person preseason watch list was announced in November. The five finalists for the award will be announced in March, with the winner being named around the Final Four. Coaches will be assessed throughout the entire season, including postseason play. Beyond on-court success, other factors such as recruiting, preseason expectations, injuries, and tactical coaching will also be weighed when assessing each candidate. Inclusion on previous watch lists is not a requirement to be considered for future watch lists.
