CAA Football Weekly Awards - Nov. 11

RICHMOND, Va. (November 11, 2024) – CAA Football has announced its weekly award winners for Week 11 of the 2024 season. Elon senior quarterback Matthew Downing was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week, while Richmond redshirt freshman linebacker Matthew Traynor received Defensive Player of the Week accolades. New Hampshire junior kicker Nick Mazzie was chosen as the Special Teams Player of the Week and Campbell freshman wide receiver/kick returner Randall King was named the Rookie of the Week.
CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Matthew Downing Sr., QB, Elon (Alpharetta, Ga./Alpharetta)
Downing passed for a season-high 315 yards and accounted for five touchdowns in Elon’s 40-36 road win at #20 William & Mary. The senior, who threw TD passes to four different receivers, twice rallied the Phoenix from 4
th-quarter deficits. He had a 1-yard scoring run with 5:12 left before guiding a 72-yard drive and throwing a game-winning 15-yard strike to Onuma Dieke with five seconds to play.
CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Matthew Traynor, R-Fr., LB, Richmond (Marietta, Ga./George Walton)
Traynor recorded a career-high 12 tackles, a career-best 2.0 TFL’s and intercepted a pass in Richmond’s 27-24 victory at Campbell. The 12 stops were five more than his previous best and the interception was his first since the season opener at Virginia. He was part of a Spiders’ defense that held CU to seven 2nd-half points as UR rallied from a 10-point deficit.
CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Nick Mazzie, Jr., PK, New Hampshire (Boxford, Mass./Central Catholic)
Mazzie accounted for 15 points in UNH’s 33-20 triumph over Monmouth. The junior was 4-for-4 on field goals, connecting on kicks of 42, 35, 35 and 31 yards, and made all three of his extra point tries. Mazzie leads the CAA with 14 made field goals, including six over 40 yards.
CAA Football Rookie of the Week
Randall King, Fr., WR/KR, Campbell (Rocky Mount, N.C./Northern Nash)
King contributed 147 all-purpose yards and a touchdown in Campbell’s 27-24 setback to #13 Richmond. The freshman gave the Camels a 14-7 second-quarter lead after returning a kickoff 90 yards for a TD, which was the first for CU since 2018. King also made four catches for 53 yards and has 300 receiving yards in the last four games.
