Stony Brook Outlasts Monmouth to Win 2024 CAA Women’s Soccer Championship

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (Nov. 9, 2024) – Stony Brook grabbed a two-goal lead and held on against the headwinds of a 28-10 shot differential to capture the 2024 CAA Women’s Soccer Championship with a 2-1 win over Monmouth on a chilly Saturday night at the Jersey Shore.
The title is Stony Brook’s first in its three seasons as a league member and will send the Seawolves to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2020-21 spring season. Stony Brook will play in its fifth NCAA Tournament after winning the America East title in 2012, 2017, 2019, and 2020-21.
Nicolette Pasquarella made eight saves, and the CAA’s top offense converted on two of its four shots on frame, scoring once in each half and holding on after Monmouth found a goal in the later stages of the contest.
Linn Beck, who scored the eventual game-winning goal after doing the same in Sunday’s semifinal win over Elon, was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. She was joined by
Reilly Rich and
Luciana Setteducate – a trio responsible for all the points for Stony Brook (14-3-3) on Saturday – and defender
Kerry Pearson on the all-tournament team.
Stony Brook struck first in the 32
nd minute on a tremendous play created and completed by Setteducate. The junior fought through contact and passed it off before Rich sent a line drive ball from just outside the 18 to the far post, where Setteducate headed it in for the game’s first tally.
The Seawolves added to the lead in the 55
th minute on a brilliant strike by Beck. The initial opportunity off the corner was off line, but Setteducate settled it and found Beck to blast one inside the far post to double the advantage.
Monmouth (12-3-5) cut into the deficit in the 79
th minute on
Summer Reimet’s league-leading 14
th goal of the season. Reimet got her defender 1v1 in the box and worked her way around to strike with her left foot past Pasquarella for the only time on the night.
Pasquarella made seven of her eight saves in the opening half;
Cassie Coster made one stop in each half for the Hawks. The Monmouth goalkeeper was joined on the all-tournament team by
Gabby Allen and
Maddison Perna.
Stony Brook will learn its destination for the NCAA Tournament on Monday at 4 p.m. The Seawolves entered play Saturday with an RPI of 64 – a number certain to climb after their record against top 100 opponents improved to 3-1-2 with the victory. Stony Brook has not lost since September 26, extending its result streak to 10 matches.
