HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (Nov. 24, 2024) - CAA Champion Hofstra’s (14-5-2) season came to an end with a 2-1 loss to Vermont in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament Sunday night.
Yaniv Bazini struck first for the Catamounts netting his fifth goal in the last four games to give Vermont the lead eight minutes in.
After lots of back-and-forth action in the first half, the Pride’s best opportunity came at the tail end of the frame. With 15 seconds remaining, CAA Tournament MOP
Laurie Goddard cut onto his right foot and rifled one low and hard to force a save from Niklas Herceg.
Jacob Woznicki equalized in the 52nd minute, capitalizing on a loose ball right in front of the Vermont goal. The goal was the ninth of the season for the All-CAA First Team selection. Minutes later, David Ismail retook the lead for the Catamounts with a side-footed shot to the far post.
The Pride kept the pressure on Vermont, with a beautiful pass from
Eoin Farrell to
Owen Barnett whose shot went right into the chest of Herceg. Shortly after,
Teddy Baker had his shot from just outside the 18-yard box hitting the post.
Facing elimination with less than five minutes remaining, the Pride thought it found an equalizer through
Roc Carles, only for the goal to be disallowed by offsides.
Hofstra’s season concludes after making its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance. The Pride won its fourth consecutive CAA Title in 2024 and tied the conference record with eight championships.
