Five Teams Collect Honors As 2024 All-CAA Men’s Soccer Awards Announced
Ben Kane
RICHMOND, Va. (Nov. 6, 2024) – Five teams had major award winners as the 2024 All-CAA Men’s Soccer awards, as voted on by the league’s head coaches, were announced on Wednesday.
Elon’s
Scott Vatne was chosen as the CAA Player of the Year and the Phoenix’s
Marc Reeves received CAA Coach of the Year honors. Charleston’s
Leonardo D’Ambrosio and Drexel’s
Patrick Short earned a share of Midfielder of the Year accolades. Monmouth’s
Gabe Dahlin was voted the Defender of the Year, and Delaware’s
Marius Stenner was recognized as the Rookie of the Year.
Balloting was conducted at the end of the regular season; coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams.
Vatne had his best season in front of goal, netting 10 goals and adding seven assists for a career-high 27 points. The Norwegian’s point tally is the most by an Elon player since Jason Waterman had 31 in the 2013 season, and his 10 goals are the first double-digit goal season since Elijah Agu scored 11 in the 2016 season.
D'Ambrosio improved his season point tally once again, netting a career-high nine goals and chipping in with seven assists. The Italian forward began the season in a rich vein of form, tallying 17 points in his first nine games, including a five-point performance against Stony Brook. Charleston’s No. 10 ranks third in the CAA in points with 25, and fourth in assists.
Short had a stellar year for Drexel, leading the conference in assists with 10, and pitching in with five goals. The graduate student midfielder’s best performance came on the final day of the season netting two goals and earning an assist to propel the Dragons to a 5-1 victory over Charleston, clinching a spot in the CAA Championship for the fifth straight season.
Dahlin anchored a Monmouth backline that ranked as one of the best in the nation. Contributing to eight shutouts in his 15 starts, the Swedish defender helped the Hawks place third in the nation in shutout percentage (.533), seventh in shutouts (8), and first in goals against (11). Dahlin also chipped in with one goal and two assists.
Stenner has already proven to be one of the most prolific players in front of goal one year into his Blue Hens’ career. The Danish forward ranked the highest In the CAA at No.14 on Top Drawer’s Midseason Top Freshman List. Stenner accrued a team-high nine goals and five assists.
Reeves guided Elon to its second CAA Regular Season Title in three years and the number one seed in the upcoming CAA Championship. The Phoenix posted their best record since 2022 with a 10-win campaign and spent a majority of the early stages of the season in the national rankings.
Eleven CAA teams earned either an All-CAA selection or All-Rookie Team honoree for their efforts in the 2024 season. All but two honorees from the All-CAA First and Second teams came from the six programs competing in the CAA Championship, with Monmouth and Elon earning five.
The six programs will battle it out for the CAA Championship starting on Thursday afternoon. All five games can be seen on FloFC.
