RICHMOND, Va. (December 23, 2024) – UNCW graduate student guard Donovan Newby and Elon senior forward Sam Sherry shared CAA men’s basketball Player of the Week honors while Hampton freshman guard Etienne Strothers was selected as the CAA Rookie of the Week.

Newby averaged 20.5 points and 3.0 assists in a pair of UNCW victories last week. The Seahawks’ guard poured in a team-best 21 points in a 79-66 win over Florida Gulf Coast and followed with 20 points, four assists and two steals as UNCW beat UNC Asheville, 85-74. For the week, Newby shot 56.5% (13-23) from the floor, including 7-of-14 from three, and was 8-of-10 at the free throw line.
CAA CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sam Sherry, Elon

Sherry posted career highs of 28 points and 14 rebounds as Elon overcame a 14-point halftime deficit and defeated UNCG, 73-69, last Saturday. Returning from a shoulder injury that caused him to miss Wednesday’s game at ETSU, Sherry scored 19 second-half points as the Phoenix posted its biggest comeback win since 2016. Sherry was 8-of-17 from the floor, grabbed eight offensive boards and added two assists and two blocks.

Etienne Strothers, Hampton

Strothers averaged 13.5 points and 3.0 rebounds as Hampton extended its winning streak to four with a 2-0 week. The freshman guard scored a career-high 13 points and added five rebounds and three assists against Regent and then topped it with 14 points and two steals in a 76-68 road victory at Loyola (Md.). For the week, Strothers shot 50% from the floor and was 4-of-7 from three and 9-of-10 at the free throw line.
