No. 3 Towson Defeats No. 11 Northeastern 78-69 in Second Round of CAA Championship

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 14, 2024) – Sixth-seeded Towson led wire-to-wire, defeating 11
th-seeded Northeastern, 78-69, in the second round of the CAA Women’s Basketball Championship presented by Primis on Thursday night at the Entertainment & Sports Arena.
The Tigers (19-10) advance to face third-seeded Charleston in the quarterfinals on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Northeastern ended its season with a 10-17 record.
All-CAA guard Kylie Kornegay-Lucas led a balanced scoring attack for Towson with 15 points, while backcourt mates Patricia Anumgba (14 points) and Alexia Nelson (12 points) were also in double digits.
Northeastern got an outstanding effort from guard Derin Erdogan, who made 5-of-9 three-pointers and poured in a game-high 30 points. Deja Bristol added 16 points on 6-of-7 FG shooting.
Towson used a late 8-0 run capped by a Kornegay-Lucas three-pointer to go up 23-15 after the opening quarter. The Tigers pushed their advantage to 16 (39-23) late in the second period on a Quinzia Fulmore shot in the lane and carried a 41-28 lead into halftime. The Tigers grabbed 17 offensive rebounds as part of a 28-15 edge on the glass in the first 20 minutes and turned them into 20 second chance points.
The Tigers maintained the momentum and steadily pulled away in the third quarter. Three-pointers from Nelson, Kornegay-Lucas and Mariah Wilson during the final four minutes of the period helped Towson move ahead 68-44 after three.
Northeastern continued to battle in the final period, hitting 10-of-14 field goal attempts (71.4%) and closing the game on a 17-3 run over the last 5:56.
Towson finished with a 44-28 rebounding advantage that included a 23-3 edge in offensive boards. The Tigers shot just 40.8% from the floor compared to 53.2% for the Huskies, but Towson had 29 more shot attempts.
