WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 15, 2024) – Top-seeded Stony Brook won the tip, scored on the first possession, and led wire-to-wire, defeating No. 8 Campbell 61-52 in the quarterfinals of the CAA Women’s Basketball Championship presented by Primis on Friday afternoon at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C.
The Seawolves (26-3) advance to the CAA Semifinals for the first time in program history, where they await the winner of No. 4 North Carolina A&T and No. 13 Hofstra at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Camels finish their first season in the CAA 17-14 with the setback.
CAA Player of the Year, Gigi Gonzalez led a balanced scoring effort for the Seawolves with 13 points. Seven players scored at least five points for Stony Brook, including 27 off the bench. Janay Brantley and Victoria Keenan each added nine points and six rebounds in reserve minutes.
Campbell was led by graduate guard Shy Tuelle, scoring a game-high 16 points, with four makes from behind the arc.
Stony Brook hit its first three shots from the field, and Campbell missed its first six as the Seawolves gained a 6-1 lead 93 seconds into the game. Stony Brook ended the frame on a 9-2 run, making its final four shots, with a Gonzalez layup giving the Seawolves a 20-10 advantage.
Campbell scored a quick five to open the second, but a scoring drought ensued. Stony Brook used a 7-0 spurt to take a 27-15 lead into the media timeout. Keenan capped the run with a three-point play. There was only one made field goal over the final 3:06, but a second-chance layup from Sherese Pittman in the final 30 seconds gave Stony Brook a 36-20 lead at the half.
The Seawolves maintained the lead throughout the second half. A defensive-themed third quarter ended with an exclamation point as Brantley banked home a three at the buzzer from about 40 feet, giving SBU a 46-29 lead. A late 13-3 Campbell run in the fourth pulled the Camels within six, 58-52, but it was as close as they would get. Stony Brook knocked down three free throws in the final 18 seconds to secure the victory.
