BOX SCORE | HIGHLIGHTS
Sam Roberson’s first career brace sent No. 2 Campbell to its first CAA Men’s Soccer Semifinals in program history with a 4-0 victory over No. 3 UNCW on Thursday night.
The Camels’ (10-5-4) historic season continues with their third four-or-more-goal showing this season, while the Seahawks saw their season come to an end with a 5-9-2 record.
Having scored just three goals in his collegiate career coming into the match, Roberson’s brace nearly doubled his career goal tally. Max Leviton’s five saves also earned him his fifth shutout of the season and first of his career against UNCW.
Campbell broke the first half deadlock through some trickery on the wing from All-CAA performer Marco Wright. The junior forward cut onto his left foot and slid one across the goalmouth to a dangerous area, with a UNCW defender ultimately putting it into the back of his own goal.
Searching for a response, UNCW continued its persistent attack, but Campbell ultimately struck next in the second half. UNCW keeper Trey Smiley made a brilliant quick-fire save, but Roberson was quickest to it, poking the ball into an open net in the 78th minute to make it 2-0. The goal marked the junior forward's first against a conference opponent.
Trying to push forward, the Seahawks lost the ball in midfield. Roberson drifted past UNCW’s defense and was sent through on goal by Ethan Roberts to record the first multiple-goal game of his career less than two minutes later.
Luc Lavielle sealed the victory in the 82nd minute, rounding Smiley from 30 yards out and scoring from a tight angle.
North Division Quarterfinals – No. 2 Stony Brook 2, No. 3 Monmouth 0
BOX SCORE | HIGHLIGHTS
Two late strikes from Finlay Oliver and Alex Fleury and a career-best performance fromgoalkeeper Heidar Hermannsson earned No. 2 Stony Brook a 2-0 win over No. 3 Monmouth on Thursday night.
The Seawolves (8-4-5) will head to the CAA Men’s Soccer Semifinals for the first time in program history. Monmouth’s season ends with a 5-8-3 record.
Hermannsson notched his fourth shutout of the season off the back of a career-high eight saves. Both programs found the target on eight occasions, with Stony Brook holding a 16-13 advantage on total shots.
The Hawks had the best attempt in a scoreless first half, when an out swinging cross found the head of Kevin DaCapua. Having made just two other saves up to that point, Hermannsson looked sharp on his line punching one over the top of the crossbar.
Monmouth was able to keep Oliver quiet for a majority of the game, with only two of his shots falling on target through the first 78 minutes. However, when the Seawolves broke out on the counter attack, Ryan Farr played a pass right into All-CAA First Team selection’s stride who went over the keeps right shoulder and into the top corner. Oliver’s tally moved to eight on the season.
With less than two and a half minutes left, Fleury sent Stony Brook through to the semifinals with his second goal in the past five days. Fleury chopped onto his right foot and created enough space to bury his strike into the top right corner.
