Hampton Takes Home First CAA Women's Indoor Track & Field Title

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Feb.27, 2025) – Hampton earned its first CAA Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship on Thursday at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.
It was the first CAA title in any sport for the Pirates, who tallied a meet-high 110 points that included three first-place finishes. Elon was close behind in second place with 107.5 points, while Northeastern rounded out the top three with 94.5 points.
Leeann Redlo of Towson was voted the Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Championship after breaking the conference record in the high jump and taking second in the pentathlon.
Towson’s
Piper Jons had the most points of any female athlete in the meet and received Most Outstanding Track Performer accolades. Jons broke records all day long, taking first place in the women’s 400m and 200m events.
Women’s Mile
William & Mary’s
Kyra Holland ran away with the title in the mile, finishing in 4:44.65. Elon’s
Sarah Petitjean (4:50.23) claimed the second spot, while Campbell’s
Emily Pierce made the podium on a 4:53.55 finish.
Women’s 60m Hurdles
Lucheyona Weaver of North Carolina A&T claimed her third straight title in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.26.
Yasmeen Tinsley of Monmouth had the second-best time with an 8.42 effort, while
Leeann Redlo from Towson earned third with a 8.77 finish.
Women’s 400m
Piper Jons from Towson found the record book for the second consecutive day shattering the Indoor CAA 400m record set two years ago. Jons’ 52.31 finish placed first and set the 20th-best time in the nation. Monmouth’s
Yasmeen Tinsley came in second with a 53.87 finish while
Emily Ervin placed third for William & Mary at 54.76.
Women’s 60m
Just .01 seconds separated first and second place, as
Aaliyah Harris notched the gold with a 7.43 second finish for A&T. Hampton’s
Brianna Charles came in just behind her with a 7.44 time, while
Arianna Alexander earned bronze for her 7.51 finish for Elon.
Women’s 800m
Nichole Dunbury’s 2:08.59 finish in the 800m was enough to earn Northeastern the CAA title.
Jordan Mozie took home second place for Hampton with a time of 2:09.70, while
Shayla Cann from Elon earned third at 2:09.78.
Women’s 200m
Piper Jons of Towson made history once again with the 23rd-best time in the nation. Posting a time of 23.20, Jons set the CAA Indoor record to win another gold medal.
Brianna Charles came in second at 23.63 for Hampton, while just behind her was Jons’ Towson teammate
Cristal Cuervo at 23.73.
Women’s 3000m
After taking the top spot in the women’s 5000m yesterday, Hampton’s
Peninah Mutisya was back at it today, setting a CAA Indoor Track and Field Championship Meet record with her 9:16.47 finish. Elon took the next two spots on the podium as
Mikayla Jones (9:26.76) and
Katie Blount (9:29.78) placed second and third respectively.
Women’s High Jump
North Carolina A&T’s
Spirit Morgan, Monmouth’s
Veronica Chaynov and Towson’s
Leeann Redlo set a new meet record, posting a 1.78 clearance. Morgan finished with gold through the tiebreaker due to fewer misses, while Redlo placed second and Chaynov earned third.
Women’s Shot Put
North Carolina A&T’s
Julieth Nwosu’s 16.15m throw in the event set the CAA Indoor Championship Meet record and earned her gold. Hampton found the podium through
Rochele Solmon’s 15.30m toss and she was joined by Delaware’s
Olamide Ayeni (14.74m) in third place.
Women’s Triple Jump
Elon’s
Jazlyn Jefferson claimed gold with a 12.35m leap to take 10 points.
Omare McBride from Campbell took second with a jump of 12.08, while A&T’s
Olivia Dowd finished the meet in third with a 12.00m mark.
Women’s 4x800m Relay
Hampton claimed the top spot with a 9:02.14 time in the 4x800m from Mekayla Wilson, Kayla Spencer, Kylee King, and Jordan Mozie.
Northeastern (9:07.20) and
Charleston (9:07.65) were separated by less than half a second to earn second and third respectively.
Women’s 4x400m Relay
With two top-100 performances in the nation,
Towson outpaced the field to win gold. Maya Tucker, Cristal Cuervo, Piper Jons, and Jasmine Scott contributed to the 3:42.15 mark, with
Hampton (3:43.29) and
Northeastern (3:44.26) following closely behind.
