Washington D.C. (Mar. 12, 2025) – No. 13 Hampton overcame a slow start and held off No. 12 Stony Brook, 76-75, in the opening game of the 2025 Credit Union 1 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship on Wednesday from Care First Arena in Washington, D.C.
The Pirates got double-digit scoring performances from four players, including three reserves, as Hampton received 41 points from its bench. Le’Asia Foreman recorded a double-double with a game-high 18 points alongside 14 rebounds, while Aisha Dabo added 17 points. Reserves Diamond Wiggins (11 points) and Tyra Kennedy (10 points) were a combined 9-of-11 from the floor as the Pirates shot 44.6% for the game.
Stony Brook also had four players score double figures. Breauna Ware topped the Seawolves with 18 points, Shamarla King tallied 17, Janay Brantley added 14 and Dallysshya Moreno had 13 points and a team-best 10 rebounds.
Stony Brook sprinted out to a hot start off the back of seven straight points from King. Hampton’s Aisha Dabo finally broke the scoring drought two minutes in with a jumper of her own. The Seawolves pulled ahead by as much as 10 in the first quarter before Hampton stormed back with a 9-0 run to level the game at 21 through the first 10 minutes.
Hampton kept up its first-quarter form, pulling ahead by nine. The Pirates were persistent in their defensive efforts during the stretch, forcing Stony Brook into five of its 12 first-half turnovers, and capitalizing to post 18 points. Momentum swung late in the quarter, as Ware’s perfect trip to the line kickstarted a 6-2 run that sent Stony Brook down into halftime trailing by five, 41-36.
Despite the Seawolves cutting the deficit to within one possession multiple times in the third, Hampton maintained a six-point cushion heading into the final frame. Up 57-51 to start the final 10 minutes, Hampton continued to pour in the scoring as Dabo netted a layup within the first 10 seconds. She went on to tally five more and mark a 10-point lead for the Pirates heading into the media timeout. The tide started to change when Moreno pirouetted past her defender and brought the Seawolves to within three.
The Pirates punched back with a 3-ball from Dabo, which extended the lead back to six. After free throws from both teams, Zaida Gonzalez pulled up from near the elbow pulling Stony Brook to within a possession. A layup from Moreno brought SBU within 74-72 with 41 seconds, but Foreman sealed the victory by sinking a pair of free throws with 1.3 seconds to play.
The Pirates advanced to the second round of the tournament for the first time since 2023 and will take on No. 5 Monmouth for the first time in CAA postseason history. The pair will face off on Thursday, Mar. 13 at 2:30 p.m., streaming live on FloCollege.
