Towson Advances to Second Round of 2025 Credit Union 1 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship with 67-44 Win Over Northeastern

Washington D.C. (Mar. 12, 2025) – Powered by a strong defensive display and a 14-0 run in the second quarter, No. 11 Towson defeated No. 14 Northeastern, 67-44, on Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the 2025 Credit Union 1 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship at CareFirst Arena.
Ten of the 11 Tigers to grace the court charted points, with Anasia Staton posting a team-high 14. Khady Leye neared a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds, to help Towson earn a 23-point win. The Tigers shot the ball well going 44.6% from the field and 91.7% from the free-throw line.
Alyssa Staten’s 20 points were the largest sum for the Huskies, while she also tacked on a game-high 14 rebounds. Northeastern shot just 26.7% from the field and was hurt by 18 turnovers.
Staton tallied nine in the first quarter, going 4-for-5 from the field and contributing to the Tigers’ impressive .529 scoring clip through the first 10. Staton’s form continued knocking down a trey at the start of the second and giving Towson a 22-13 lead. Northeastern’s Yirsy Queliz clawed the Huskies to within four, hitting a jumper and then a 3-pointer to make it 28-24 with 5:07 left in the period.
Towson immediately went on a 14-0 run over the next three and a half minutes, kicking off with a jumper from Leye and ending with a perfect trip to the line from Semaya Turner. Queliz came right back at the Tigers, hitting a buzzer-beater three to send Northeastern into halftime down 42-26.
Towson relied on its defense in the second half, holding the Huskies 18 points and never letting the margin get closer than 12. Towson poked the ball free six times in the second half, as a part of seven second-half NU turnovers and 18 overall. The Tigers made the most of Northeastern’s mistakes, wracking up 19 points off the miscues.
Towson will face off against No. 6 Elon at 8:30 from CareFirst Arena on Thursday, Mar. 13 in the Second Round of the 2025 Credit Union 1 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship. The matchup will be streaming live on FloCollege.
