CAA BASEBALL WEEKLY REPORT - MARCH 24
RICHMOND, Va. (March 24, 2025) – Charleston junior infielder
Ethan Plyler was selected as the CAA baseball Player of the Week, while UNCW freshman right-hander
Cam Bagwell received Pitcher of the Week accolades. North Carolina A&T freshman infielder
Tyler Smith was chosen as the Rookie of the Week.
CAA Baseball Player of the Week
Ethan Plyler, Charleston – Jr., IF – Lexington, S.C.
Plyler batted .524 (11-21) with six doubles, a homer and seven RBI’s in Charleston’s five games last week. The junior hit .538 (7-13) with four doubles, a homer and six RBI’s in Charleston’s series win over Elon, including a pair of 3-for-4 efforts in both victories. He was also 3-for-4 with two doubles in a 4-3 setback to SEC foe South Carolina.
CAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Cam Bagwell, UNCW – Fr., RHP – Pineville, N.C.
Bagwell threw the first perfect game in CAA history in UNCW’s 12-0 win over Campbell in seven innings on Sunday. The freshman right-hander struck out three and had only one three-ball count in the game as he recorded the first perfect game for a Seahawks’ pitcher since 1968 and first UNCW no-hitter since 1995. Bagwell improved to 4-0 with a CAA-best 2.02 ERA for the season.
CAA Baseball Rookie of the Week
Tyler Smith, North Carolina A&T – Fr., IF – Hollywood, Fla.
Smith batted .409 (9-22) with two doubles, a homer, nine runs scored and eight RBI’s in North Carolina A&T’s 3-2 week. The freshman infielder drove in all eight runs and scored six times in the Aggies’ series win over William & Mary. For the week, he had multiple hits and scored multiple runs in three contests to raise his season average to a team-best .341.
Conference notes:
HOME TEAMS WIN FIVE OF SIX SERIES IN CAA PLAY: All 12 teams picked up at least one conference win during the opening weekend of CAA play. Home teams (
Campbell, Charleston, Delaware, North Carolina A&T and
Northeastern) won five of the six series, with
Hofstra being the lone team to win a series on the road.
ELITE PITCHING PERFORMANCES: In addition to the first perfect game in CAA history by UNCW freshman
Cam Bagwell, there were other impressive pitching performances over the weekend. Northeastern junior
Aiven Cabral threw a complete-game 1-hit shutout against Towson on Saturday, allowing only a 6th-inning single and striking out six over 7.0 innings. On Friday, Campbell’s
Jake Murray gave up just two hits over 6.0 shutout frames vs. UNCW and struck out a career-high 12. Delaware’s
Tim Hartman threw 7.0 scoreless innings over two starts and Charleston reliever
Alex Lyon surrendered one earned run over 8.1 innings in three appearances last week.
BREAK OUT THE BATS: Despite the strong individual efforts on the mound, offenses dominated the opening weekend of CAA play. The winning team scored 10 or more runs in 12 of the 18 contests, including all six on Saturday, and both teams tallied double-digit runs in five of them.
CAMPBELL (10-13, 2-1 CAA): The Camels won two-of-three from defending CAA champ UNCW to open conference play. Campbell picked up a 3-2 victory on Friday as
Jake Murray (2-2) held the Seahawks without a hit for the first 5.0 innings and then escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the 6th by fanning the side as part of a career-high 12 strikeouts. He has 52 K’s in 31.2 innings for the year.
Dalen Thompson was 2-for-4, including a key 2-run homer in the 3rd. In Saturday’s 17-9 triumph,
Jonah Oster was 4-for-5 with four RBI’s and
Joey Morton was 3-for-5 with a homer and five RBI’s.
CHARLESTON (14-8, 2-1 CAA): The Cougars took two-of-three from Elon to start CAA play. CofC plated 36 runs against the Phoenix, with
Ethan Plyler going 7-for-13 with four doubles, a homer and six RBI’s in the series and freshman
Landon Penfield going 5-for-9 with six RBI’s over the final two games.
Payton Frehner homered twice vs. EU and
Avery Neaves had five RBI’s and extended his on base streak to 15 games.
Jake Brink moved to 3-1 after holding Elon to two runs over 6.0 innings on Friday.
Alex Lyon tied his career high with a four-inning outing on Sunday and gave up just one run over 8.1 frames last week.
DELAWARE (12-10, 2-1 CAA): The Blue Hens had a 3-1 week capped by a series win over Stony Brook.
Aiden Stewart homered twice and drove in six in Saturday’s 15-10 victory over SBU on Saturday and added a 2-run shot on Sunday.
Aaron Graeber and
Jackson Tyer each smacked 2-run homers in Friday’s 8-1 victory over the Seawolves. Graeber was also 5-for-5 with a homer on Saturday and has 8 HR’s on the year. Relievers
Carter Welch and
Jake Pollaro threw 3.0 scoreless innings apiece on Friday.
Tim Hartman didn’t allow a run over 7.0 frames in two starts last week, including a four-inning stint vs. SBU.
ELON (9-14, 1-2 CAA): The Phoenix went 1-3 last week, but picked up a 14-13 win at Charleston on Saturday. Catcher
Alex Duffey batted .533 (8-15) for the week, highlighted by back-to-back 3-for-4 outings with a homer and three RBI’s in each of the final two games at CofC. He snapped a 13-13 tie with an RBI single in the 9th on Saturday and raised his average to .360 with 24 RBI’s.
Ryan Sprock belted a 3-run homer in the 1st on Saturday and then earned the win with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. Sprock tops EU with a .371 batting average.
Charlie Granatell was 8-for-17 (.471) with a homer last week.
HOFSTRA (9-14, 2-1 CAA): The Pride captured a road series at Monmouth as part of a 2-2 week. Outfielder
Tyler Cox batted .444 (8-18) with eight RBI’s last week and extended his hitting streak to seven games. He was 5-for-10 and drove in seven in the final two games at Monmouth.
Jackson Bauer (2-2) scattered eight singles and allowed just one earned run over 6.0 innings while fanning six in Friday’s win over the Hawks.
Dylan Palmer was 2-for-4 with two RBI’s and two stolen bases on Friday and hit .500 (7-14) for the series. He tops the Pride with a .380 batting average.
MONMOUTH (10-13, 1-2 CAA): The Hawks closed a 1-3 week in dramatic fashion, earning a 12-11 walk-off win over Hofstra in 10 innings.
Chris Andrews delivered a game-tying 2-out RBI single in the 10th and then scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch. He finished the game 4-for-5 with a homer and four RBI’s.
Jay Bant was 4-for-5 with two RBI’s and
Chris Walsh drove in four as Momouth fell 13-12 in 10 innings to the Pride on Saturday.
Ryan Mealy provided 3.0 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts on Saturday, while
Austin Beard turned in a solid start on Sunday, giving up an earned run over 5.0 innings.
NORTH CAROLINA A&T (6-15, 2-1 CAA): The Aggies rebounded from a 10-game skid by beating Radford (8-2) and then taking two-of-three from William & Mary. A&T plated 37 runs against the Tribe. Outfielder
JT Taylor batted .571 (8-14) with four doubles and seven RBI’s over a 3-game stretch last week and raised his season average to .338. Freshman
Tyler Smith also had a big week at the plate, hitting .409 (9-22) and scoring nine times. He drove in eight runs against W&M and had three multi-hit games to push his team-best average to .341.
Evan Hart held Radford to one hit over 4.0 scoreless innings and fanned five.
UNCW (12-12, 1-2 CAA): The Seahawks opened last week with a 9-4 victory over rival East Carolina and closed it with a 12-0 win at Campell as freshman
Cam Bagwell (4-0) threw the first perfect game in CAA history and first at UNCW since 1968.
Trevor Lucas belted a 3-run homer as part of a four-RBI day against the Camels while
Brady Thompson was 2-for-2 and drove in three.
Alec DeMartino went 7-for-15 (.467) with six RBI’s and five runs scored last week.
Tanner Thach was 2-for-5 with three RBI’s and
Cole Nelson homered in the win over ECU.
Aubrey Smith got his first victory after holding ECU to a run over 4.0 innings.
NORTHEASTERN (14-8, 2-1 CAA): The Huskies closed a five-game week with a pair of wins over Towson.
Aiven Cabral (2-2) threw a complete-game, 1-hit shutout in Saturday’s 10-0 win, giving up only a 6th-inning single and striking out six over 7.0 innings.
Jordan Gottesman (2-1) followed in Sunday’s 6-2 triumph by allowing one hit over 6.0 scoreless frames and fanning seven.
Harrison Feinberg batted .353 with at least one hit in all five games last week. He drove in six runs, including a 3-run homer on Saturday and stole five bases. Freshman
Will Fosberg doubled twice and drove in three in a win over Merrimack.
STONY BROOK (10-11, 1-2 CAA): The Seawolves split four road games last week, beating Rider (4-2) before closing with a 6-3 victory at Delaware.
Matthew Jackson had a two-run single and
Erik Paulsen homered as SBU rallied from a 3-0 deficit at UD on Sunday.
Jacob Pedersen closed the contest with 3.0 shutout innings to earn his second save.
Nico Azpilcueta homered twice and drove in four and SBU got long balls from
Chanz Doughty and
Chris Carson against the Hens on Saturday, but fell 15-10. Seven pitchers combined to limit Rider to five hits, while Azpilcueta provided three RBI’s in that win.
TOWSON (8-17, 1-2 CAA): The Tigers out-slugged UMass, 20-15, and edged Northeastern, 3-2, in 11 innings as part of a 2-3 week. Outfielder
Max D’Alessandro tied a TU record for hits vs. UMass, going 6-for-6 with a double, homer and five RBI’s. He was also 2-for-5 in the victory at NU, including a game-winning solo homer in the 11th. D’Alessandro batted .476 for the week.
Brady Nathison was 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBI’s and
Ethan Brand was 4-for-5 with a homer and four RBI’s against UMass.
Matt Lynch and
Kyle Emmons combined for 5.0 shutout innings of relief in the NU win.
WILLIAM & MARY (7-17, 1-2 CAA): The Tribe went 2-2 last week, beating rival Old Dominion (10-8) and topping N.C. A&T (18-13) on Saturday. Outfielder
Lucas Carmichael batted .500 (9-18) with two doubles, two homers, seven runs scored and seven RBI’s last week. He was 4-for-5 and drove in four in Saturday’s win and his two weekend HR’s were the first of his career. Freshman
Jamie Laskofski hit .429 (6-14) last week and scored eight times. He was 3-for-4 with three RBI’s in the win at A&T.
Derek Holmes knocked in nine runs last week and is tied for the CAA lead with 26 RBI’s.
