Fairfield Men's Lacrosse Not Satisfied: Nation's Lone Undefeated Team Pursues Title Dreams
Amanda Poole
RICHMOND, Va. (Mar. 28, 2025) - Fairfield men’s lacrosse is off to a historic start to the season and remains the only undefeated program in the country with a 9-0 record.
CAA Reporter Amanda Poole caught up with head coach Andrew Baxter alongside captains Luke Okupski, Matt Rice, and Thompson on the hot streak, and the Stags hunger for more.
"The season's been awesome," said Thompson. "The vibe around the locker room has been phenomenal. The vibe on the field is phenomenal."
The Stags 9-0 start marks its best opening stretch to a season in program history, surpassing a 7-0 stretch that dates back to 2012.
"It's not really about, you know, winning or losing really with this group," said Thompson. "It's just about how much work you put in with each other every day and just letting the boys know that we love each other, we're there for each other, and that's what makes this season so incredible is that everyone-- it's just like having 54 brothers out there with me."
Coming into this season, the Stags finished third in last year’s CAA Championship, falling to Delaware in the semifinals. While the stretch of form is nice, Fairfield isn’t getting ahead of itself when it comes to finishing out the season undefeated.
"Our goal was not to be undefeated or to have this streak," said Okupski.
"Our goal is to win a CAA championship and win an NCAA championship. So, we like the success that we're having, and it's definitely helping us gain momentum, but at the end of the day, I think there's a great presence in the locker room that's, it's just commonly understood that our mission is still ahead of us, and the goals that we set at the beginning of the season, we haven't really checked off any of them yet, and that's kind of what we're working towards."
