(Mar. 27, 2025) – Charleston saw its season come to and end in the third round of the WNIT with an 89-67 loss to Rutgers on Thursday night in Piscataway, N.J. The Cougars (25-6) had a historic season winning 25 games to set the program’s NCAA Division I record for most victories in a single season. Taryn Barbot was unstoppable for the Cougars, scoring a team-high 33 points, marking her fourth game with 30 or more points this season. She also grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds. Jazmyn Stone had 12 points to her name, while Taylor Barbot had a complete stat line with 11 points, nine assists, and six rebounds. As a whole, the Cougars shot 32.8% from the field and 38.5% from deep. Rutgers got double-digits from six scorers with Jojo Lacey’s 19 being a squad best followed by Mya Petticord and Destiny Adams having 18 apiece. Rutgers outrebounded Charleston 47-34, and was efficient in its scoring efforts, shooting a .465 clip from the floor and .480 from beyond the arc. Taryn Barbot was red hot in the first half scoring 23 of the Cougars’ 36 points. After Rutgers went on an 8-2 run to start the game, the CAA Player of the Year pieced together a 8-4 stretch of her own including two trey balls to take a lead with 30 seconds left in the frame. She was most prolific in the second quarter, scoring 12 on 5-of-8 shooting, keeping Charleston within one possession heading into the second half with a 38-36 Scarlet Knight advantage. Rutgers found its rhythm in the second half, compiling an 11-4 run as Petticord, Adams, Lacey, and Awa Sidibe all found the cup. Taylor Barbot scored three points for the Cougars followed by six straight free throws from her sister Taryn to cut Rutgers's lead to 62-49 entering the final 10. The Cougars knocked down four-straight 3-pointers with Leah Philpotts, Taylor Barbot, and Stone, sinking one, however, 28 fourth-quarter points from the Scarlet Knights were too much to overcome for Charleston.
