Northeastern Heads Back To Boston With 11th Straight CAA Rowing Championship

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (May 17, 2025) – Northeastern needed to best Drexel’s performance in the Varsity Eight grand Final and did just that to claim its 11th consecutive CAA Rowing Championship on Saturday morning at the Cooper River. The Huskies post a conference-best 14 CAA Championship titles.
Northeastern headed into the final event just one point ahead of the Dragons and held onto its lead, finishing with 47 points compared to the Dragons' 40. Delaware (31 points) and Villanova (29 points) moved up two spots from last season to claim third and fourth, respectively. UC San Diego (26), UConn (19), Eastern Michigan (18), and Monmouth (6) rounded out the standings.
Northeastern and Drexel were neck and neck heading into the Varsity Eight Grand Final, however, the Huskies broke open the water early on and cruised to victory with a time of 6:45.458. Delaware took second at 6:54.533, while Drexel earned bronze with a 6:59.144 finish. The gold medal for Northeastern marked the Huskies' fifth-straight win in the Varsity Eight and the 14th victory in the past 16 seasons.
In the first scoring event of the day, Drexel dominated, finishing with a 7:33.609 time to end Northeastern’s long run of dominance in the Varsity Four Grand Final, claiming its first gold medal since the 2019 season. Northeastern’s 7:36.702 stretch earned it second, while Delaware earned one of its two grand final podium finishes with a 7:41.602 time.
Northeastern pulled ahead early in the 2nd Varsity Eight Grand Final and never looked back, claiming its 13th win in the event with a finish of 6:44.273. The race for the podium was close, with three teams all vying for two spots, but ultimately it was Drexel (6:52.540) and Villanova (6:56.073) who claimed the final medals.
Joe Wilhelm of Northeastern was named the CAA Coach of the Year.
Northeastern will hear its name called in the NCAA Championship selection show on Tuesday, May 20 at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.
