BUIES CREEK, N.C. (May 8, 2025) – No. 4 seed Campbell took down top-seeded Delaware, 3-2, in a thrilling nine-inning affair from Amanda Littlejohn Stadium on Thursday.
Deadlocked at two heading into extras, the Camels (35-18) broke the tie after a one-out walk to
Allyiah Swiney in the top of the ninth. After reaching third on a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt,
Charlie Montgomery played hero and laced an RBI single into right-center to take a 3-2 lead.
The Blue Hens (37-15) did not go down quietly, working back-to-back two-out singles to put the winning run on first in the home half of the ninth. Campbell’s
Tyra Parker took flight to end the game with a full extension headfirst dive on the left-field line, making the catch and sealing the one-run victory.
Montgomery registered a 2-for-5 day at the dish with an RBI. Parker and
Haley Krebs also joined Swiney in the run column, all crossing home plate once in the effort.
Starter
Megan Gregory picked up her 12
th win of the season, going a full nine innings and striking out four. The sophomore pitcher surrendered just two runs on seven hits in the victory.
Delaware struck first in the opening frame as the CAA’s home run leader
Sydney Shaffer belted her 19
th of the season, taking a 2-2 pitch to dead center and putting the Blue Hens up 1-0.
After a blank second frame, Campbell rocked back-to-back one-out singles in the third before a walk to
Hannah Cornetto loaded the bases. The Camels brought two runs around to score, 2-1, on a Delaware throwing error trying to get the force out at the dish.
The Blue Hens’ ace
Billie Kerwood recorded her 700
th career strikeout to end the top of the fourth, becoming the seventh active player in NCAA Division I to hit the milestone. The senior hurler finished with six strikeouts and 144 pitches thrown in her nine innings of work.
The punchout fired up the Blue Hens’ bench and saw
Ryleigh Thomas belt a solo shot to left field, knotting the game at two through four frames.
Kerwood and Gregory engaged in a pitcher’s duel over the next three innings. Campbell’s ace retired the side in order in both the sixth and the seventh innings. The league’s strikeout leader, Kerwood, finished off her 1-2-3 seventh frame with a punchout to force extra innings.
Campbell nearly put the game away in the top of the eighth, putting runners on the corners with two outs. However, the Blue Hens’ first baseman
Sorella Gallucci corralled a grounder from the Camels’ Parker and dove headfirst into the bag to halt the fourth seed’s opportunity. Campbell scored in the ninth before Parker returned the favor with a game-ending diving catch.
