NEWS AND NOTES
And Then There Was One
Charleston remains the only undefeated team in conference play, piecing together a 6-0 start to the CAA season. Collecting wins over Hofstra, Northeastern, William & Mary, Hampton, Drexel, and Elon, the Cougars are on a seven-game win streak dating back to Dec. 20. Taryn Barbot continues to dominate, ranking first in the conference with 19.9 points per game. Taylor Barbot ranks as one of the top playmakers in the nation, with a CAA-topping 7.0 assists per game.
Toppling Last Year’s Total
After trailing William & Mary 12-2 in the first half minutes, Hampton went on a 39-12 run to pull off a 59-49 win. The victory earned the Pirates their eighth of the season, matching Tamisha Augustin’s total from a season ago. Hampton’s result over William & Mary was also the first since November 2009, and the first in Williamsburg since December 2008.
Starting Off Swimmingly
Stony Brook’s 5-1 start to conference play matches the Seawolves’ best beginning to a CAA season ever. After losing the first game of the campaign to Hampton, Joy McCorvey’s team is riding a five-game win streak. Predicted to finish 12th in the preseason poll, Stony Brook has defeated five programs picked to finish ahead of it, including Drexel and N.C. A&T, which both received first-place votes. The Seawolves rank as the top defense in the conference, restricting its opponents to 56.2 points per game and a CAA-best 26.8% from behind the arc. Sandra Frau-Garcia has been stellar during her first season on the Island, averaging 4.6 assists per game to put her second in the CAA.
Road Warriors
Friday was a night for the road teams, with five of the six wins going to the away program. In the early afternoon tip, Stony Brook won the battle of Long Island, defeating Hofstra 61-44. Campbell traveled to Boston to earn a 61-51 victory over Northeastern. Hampton stayed somewhat close to home, defeating William & Mary 59-49. Monmouth traveled over to Maryland and won 56-53 over Towson, while Elon defeated UNCW 72-62. Charleston was the lone home team of the night to earn a victory, edging Drexel 74-64.
Eight Points Did The Trick
Two players eclipsed 1,000 career points with their programs this weekend. Towson’s India Johnston became the 20th player in program history to reach the feat after dropping eight points in the matchup against Stony Brook. After a win over Monmouth, Gianni Boone and Campbell retook the court for what would be a record-breaking afternoon. With eight points in the loss to Hampton, Boone became the 22nd player in program history to eclipse the total.
