CAA BASEBALL WEEKLY REPORT - MARCH 16

RICHMOND, Va. (March 16, 2026) – UNCW sophomore utility player Mason Hughes repeated as CAA baseball Player of the Week, while UNCW’s Bromley Thornton and Elon’s Owen Winebarger shared CAA Pitcher of the Week accolades. Campbell freshman outfielder Carlos Lugo was chosen as the CAA Rookie of the Week.

CAA Baseball Player of the Week
Mason Hughes, UNCW – So., IF/OF – Eastover, N.C.
Hughes repeats as Player of the Week after batting .500 (7-14) with three doubles, six runs and six RBI’s in UNCW’s 4-0 week that extended its win streak to seven. The sophomore was 2-for-3 and drove in three vs. Charleston Southern, went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s on Saturday vs. Elon and was 2-for-3 and scored three times on Sunday vs. Elon. Hughes also drew five walks and had a 1.364 OPS for the week.

CAA Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week
Bromley Thornton, UNCW – Jr., RHP – Wilmington, N.C.
Thornton allowed just one hit in a complete-game 7.0 inning shutout as UNCW beat Elon, 11-0, on Sunday. The right-hander gave up a second-inning single and then held Elon hitless the rest of the way for the first one-hitter by a Seahawks’ hurler since 2014. Thornley fanned four in his second straight complete game.

CAA Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week
Owen Winebarger, Elon – So., LHP – Marshall, Va.
Winebarger scattered four hits over 6.1 shutout innings in Elon’s 2-0 win at No. 10 NC State last Tuesday. The lefty struck out four in a career-long outing as the Phoenix posted their first victory over a Top 10 team on the road since 2010. Winebarger also threw 3.0 innings of relief at UNCW on Sunday, giving up two hits and one earned run.

CAA Baseball Rookie of the Week
Carlos Lugo, Campbell – Fr., OF – Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Lugo batted .588 (10-17) with eight runs scored and two RBI’s in Campbell’s 2-2 week. The freshman outfielder had multiple hits in all four games, including going 3-for-4 with a double, homer, two RBI’s and three runs in a 10-0 win over North Carolina A&T last Saturday and 3-for-5 vs. Charlotte. Lugo tops the Camels with seven multi-hit games and is batting .345 for the year.

CONFERENCE NOTES

ELON KNOCKS OFF NC STATE
A CAA team earned a win over a nationally ranked opponent for the second week in a row as Elon defeated No. 10 NC State, 2-0, last Tuesday. It was the Phoenix’s fourth victory over a Top 10 opponent in the past four seasons and first on the road since 2010. It was the CAA’s third ranked win this season as Northeastern beat No. 2 LSU (13-10) on March 2 and Charleston topped No. 6 Coastal Carolina (4-3) on Feb. 17. 

EARLY CONFERENCE LEADERS
With two weeks of conference play in the books, Monmouth and Northeastern are tied atop the North Division at 5-1. The Hawks swept Towson and took 2-of-3 from Hofstra, while the Huskies won 2-of-3 at Stony Brook before a sweep of Towson.

UNCW leads the South Division at 3-0 after sweeping Elon last weekend. Campbell is right behind at 5-1 after winning three over William & Mary and claiming 2-of-3 at N.C. A&T. Charleston has won its first two CAA series over Hofstra and Stony Brook for a 4-2 mark. 

LOOKING AHEAD
Three CAA teams will host nationally ranked opponents this week. On Tuesday, No. 10 NC State visits UNCW and No. 19 Clemson travels to Charleston. On Wednesday, No. 16 Coastal Carolina heads to Campbell.

CAMPBELL CAMELS  (9-9; 5-1 CAA)

• The Camels had a 2-2 week, which included its second CAA series win over North Carolina A&T.

• CU scored a season-high 21 runs at A&T on Friday, including five homers. Jonah Oster went deep twice and drove in a season-high five runs in the game and had seven RBI’s in the series.

• Carlos Lugo had multiple hits in all four games last week and batted .588 (10-17) with eight runs scored.

• David Rossow allowed just three hits over 6.1 scoreless innings and struck out a career-high 13 batters in a 10-0 win at A&T on Saturday. He improved to 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA.

CHARLESTON COUGARS (9-10; 4-2 CAA)

• The Cougars won their second straight CAA series, taking 2-of-3 from Stony Brook as part of a 2-2 week.

• CofC had a 5-4 walk-off win over SBU on Saturday as Nick Diaz led off the 10th with a double and scored on an error.
 
• Jake Amman batted .500 (7-14) in the SBU series with multiple hits in all three games. He leads the Cougars with a .361 batting average. 
 
• Alex Lyon made his 85th career relief appearance on Saturday, which is tied for the 2nd-most in school history. He’s 1-1 with a save and a 2.53 ERA.

• Reliever Ryan Hench has allowed just one run in 10 appearances (0.79 ERA).

ELON PHOENIX (9-10; 2-4 CAA)

• The Phoenix knocked off No. 10 NC State, 2-0, last Tuesday but was swept in its CAA series at UNCW. The win over the Wolfpack was Elon’s first road victory over a Top 10 foe since 2010.

• Owen Winebarger threw a career-long 6.1 shutout innings to earn the win at NC State and allowed just one earned run in 3.0 frames of relief at UNCW. 

• Brian DuRoff drove in both Elon runs at NC State with a sac fly and a RBI single. Jackson Alford was 2-for-3 in the contest and scored both runs.

• R.J. Latkowski tops the CAA with five saves and has a 0.87 ERA.

HOFSTRA PRIDE (3-10; 2-4 CAA)

• Hofstra went 2-2 last week, including a win in its first true home game over Rider (16-6). The victory was the 100th in the Hofstra career of head coach Frank Catalanotto.

• Michael Brown belted a pair of homers against Rider, which were the first of his career, and Tyler Cox ended the game with a solo shot.

• CJ Griggs drove in five runs in the Pride’s CAA series at Monmouth. Two of those RBI’s came in Saturday’s 5-4 victory, including a run-scoring single in the 7th that snapped a 4-4 tie.

• Tanner Sanderoff and Deuce Musial combined for 4.2 shutout innings of relief in Saturday’s victory with six K’s.

MONMOUTH HAWKS (8-8; 5-1 CAA)

• The Hawks are tied atop the North Division at 5-1 after taking 2-of-3 from Hofstra as part of a 3-1 week.

• OF Colin Richter batted .357 for the week and drove in nine. He belted a grand slam on Sunday vs. Hofstra to help the Hawks rally from a 7-1 deficit to win 19-9. It was his first career homer.

• Nick Lovarco went 5-for-9 with four runs scored and three RBI’s in the final two games vs. Hofstra.

• Caden Carlin earned the win on Sunday vs. Hofstra after providing 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.

N.C. A&T AGGIES (4-15; 2-4 CAA)

• The Aggies ended a 1-3 week on a positive note, handing Campbell its first CAA loss with a 7-4 win on Sunday.

• Nick DeCarlo had a big week at the plate, hitting .529 (9-17) with four doubles and five runs scored. He’s riding a nine-game hitting streak and tops the Aggies with .400 batting average.

• Savoi Edwards recorded eight RBI’s in the four games last week after having just two over his first 11 contests.

• Agyei Quinichett surrendered just one hit in 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the win against Campbell on Sunday.

UNCW SEAHAWKS (14-6; 3-0 CAA)

• The Seahawks swept their CAA-opening series over Elon to cap a 4-0 week. UNCW has won seven in a row, which is tied for the 9th-longest streak nationally.

• Mason Hughes batted .500 with six runs scored and six RBI’s last week. He’s had a hit in nine of his last 10 games, raising his season average to a CAA-best .442.

• UNCW shut out Elon in the final two games of the series. Cooper Allen moved to 3-0 with 7.0 scoreless frames on Saturday and Bromley Thornton (3-1) gave up just one hit in 7.0 innings.

• UNCW rallied from a 7-2 deficit and edged Elon, 8-7, in 16 innings on Friday.

NORTHEASTERN HUSKIES (9-7; 5-1 CAA)

• The Huskies swept CAA foe Towson as part of a 4-0 week. NU has won nine of its last 10 after starting 0-6.

• Eric Cha batted .385 (5-13) last week with two homers and a team-high five RBI’s. He’s on a six-game hitting streak and has raised his season average to .310.

• NU allowed just five earned runs in the 3-game series with Towson. Andrew Basel threw 4.0 scoreless innings of relief in the opener, before strong starts from Luc Rising (6.0 IP, 1 R) and Ryan Griffin (6.2 IP, 1 ER).

• Ryan Gerety produced three multi-hit games from the leadoff spot last week.

STONY BROOK SEAWOLVES (3-14; 2-4 CAA)

• The Seawolves had a 1-3 week, but picked up a 3-1 victory at Charleston in Friday’s series opener. 

• Micah Worley earned the win vs. CofC, allowing just one run on four hits over 5.1 innings while striking out 10 with no walks. It was his second game this season with double-digit K’s.

• Nicholas Dromboski batted .368 with three multi-hit games last week. He’s on a six-game hitting streak.

• John Rizzo didn’t allow a run in a pair of relief appearances at CofC and struck out four in 2.2 innings.

TOWSON TIGERS (6-10; 0-6 CAA)

• The Tigers picked up a 7-6 victory at George Washington last Tuesday, but dropped three games at Northeastern.

• Liam Diehl limited NU to two earned runs over 6.0 innings and struck out a season-high seven in a 3-1 setback on Saturday. He has a 2.78 ERA in 22.2 innings of work.

• Keldrin Rodriguez had a hit in all three games at NU, extending his hitting streak to eight games.

• Brian Heckelman smacked his team-leading fourth homer in the victory at GW.

WILLIAM & MARY TRIBE (7-11; 0-3 CAA)

• W&M ended a seven-game skid with a pair of victories at Georgetown over the weekend.

• Trey Christman batted .368 (7-19) over five games last week with a pair of homers and eight RBI’s. 
 
• Jamie Laskofski extended his hitting streak to nine last week. He was 2-for-3 with a solo homer and three runs scored in Sunday’s 7-3 victory at GU.

• Tom Bourque held the Hoyas to one hit over 3.0 shutout innings to close out an 8-2 win on Saturday.
